Drill cores from the ocean floor were dated and found to be very young compared to the age of the earth. This means the crust had to be formed recently, which can be explained by creation of crust at a spreading center.

Answer:

The correct answer is as follows.

Explanation:

The theory of seafloor spreading states that seafloor lithosphere is not stationary, on the contrary, it is constantly renewing at mid-ocean ridges. The research from the Glomar Challenger, that use a scientific drilling vessel, helped to support this theory by taking rock samples from the Mid-ocean ridge. After analyzing the rock samples it was revealed that the farther from the mid-ocean ridge, the older the rock was.

7. Which two substances do geologists use in radiocarbon dating?
Sav [38]

Carbon -14 and Carbon 12 are the two substances geologists use in radiocarbon dating.

Answer: Option B

Explanation:

Radiocarbon dating denotes the determination process of the age of fossils of plants or animals based on the ratio of carbon atoms 14 to 12. Carbon naturally exists in two non-radioactive isotopes, Carbon-12 and Carbon-13 and one radioactive isotope carbon 14. The carbon 14 gets released on continuous cosmic reaction with atmospheric nitrogen.

These carbon 14 will be absorbed by the living plants and from the plants. Then, it will enter inside the animals which consume the plants. But once the plants and animals died, they ceased to intake carbon-14. In their living state, the ratios of carbon atoms 14 to 12 in them tends to similar to the ratio in atmosphere.

But after they die, the ratio of C-14 to C-12 will be varying from the ratio of C-14 to C-12 in atmosphere as the concentration of C-14 will be decreasing in the dead animals and plants. Thus using this ratio, geologists can find the fossil's age.

Is gunpowder a homogenous mixture or a heterogenous mixture? Explain why.
inysia [295]

Gunpowder is a heterogenous mixture,

Reason : the composiotion of the mixture is not uniform throughout, the mixture can be separated by a suitable method , and finally , it composes of charcoal, sulfur and potassium nitrate which is not homogeneous mixture.

Compound X has a molar mass of 416.48 g mol
bazaltina [42]

Answer:

P₂Cl₁₀

Explanation:

From the question given above, the following data were obtained:

Molar mass of compound X = 416.48 g/mol

Percentage of phosphorus (P) = 14.87%

Percentage of Chlorine (Cl) = 85.13%

Molecular formula of X =?

Next, we shall determine the empirical formula of compound X. This can be obtained as follow:

P = 14.87%

Cl = 85.13%

Divide by their molar mass

P = 14.87 / 31 = 0.480

Cl = 85.13 / 35.5 = 2.398

Divide by the smallest

P = 0.480 / 0.480 = 1

Cl = 2.398 / 0.480 = 5

Empirical formula of compound X is PCl₅

Finally, we shall determine the molecular formula of compound X. This can be obtained as follow:

Molar mass of compound X = 416.48 g/mol

Empirical formula = PCl₅

Molecular formula =?

Molecular formula= [Empirical formula]ₙ

[PCl₅]ₙ = 416.48

[31 + (35.5 × 5)]ₙ = 416.48

[31 + 177.5]n = 416.48

208.5n = 416.48

Divide both side by 208.5

n = 416.48 / 208.5

n = 2

Molecular formula = [PCl₅]ₙ

Molecular formula = [PCl₅]₂

Molecular formula = P₂Cl₁₀

Therefore, the molecular formula of compound X is P₂Cl₁₀
