You are exiting a highway and need to slow down on the off-ramp in order to make the curve. It is rainy and the coefficient of s

tatic friction between your tires and the road is only 0.25. If the radius of the off-ramp curve is 40 m, then to what speed do you need to slow down the car in order to make the curve without sliding?
Please explain how to do it.

Answer:

Speed = 9.9 m/s

Explanation:

Given:

Coefficient of static friction is, \mu=0.25

Radius of the curve, r=40 m

Let the speed that has to be reached be v m/s.

In order to avoid sliding while making a turn, the frictional force provides the necessary centripetal force.

We know that, frictional force acting on a body is given as:

f=\mu N=\mu mg (N=mg as there is no vertical motion)

Also, from the definition of centripetal force,

f=\frac{mv^2}{r}

On equating the above two equations, we get

\frac{mv^2}{r}=\mu mg\\v^2=\mu gr\\v=\sqrt{\mu gr}

Now, plug in 0.25 for \mu, 9.8 for g and 40 for r.

v=\sqrt{0.25\times 9.8\times 40}\\v=\sqrt{98}=9.9\textrm{ m/s}

Therefore, speed of the car has to be slowed down to minimum of 9.9 m/s in order to avoid sliding while making a turn.

Explain why a car driving around a curve at a constant speed is accelerating.
GREYUIT [131]
But the fact is that an accelerating object is an object that is changing it’s velocity.. for this reason , it can be safely concluded that an object moving in a circle at constant speed is indeed accelerating. It is accelerating because the direction of the velocity vector is changing .

(a) A 70-kg person at rest has an oxygen consumption rate Qhum = 14.5 liter/h, 2% of which is supplied by diffusion through the
nevsk [136]

Answer:

(a) fd=1.7058\times 10^{-5}\ L.hr^{-1}.cm(b) [tex]r=26.008\ cm

Explanation:

(a)

  • Oxygen consumption rate of humans, Q_h=14.5\ L.hr^{-1}

area of human skin, A_h=1.7\ m^2

  • diffusion rate through skin of humans, d=2\%\ of\ Q_h
  • ∴d=\frac{2}{100} \times 14.5

d=0.29\ L.hr^{-1}

<u>Flux of diffusion rate, </u>

fd=\frac{d}{A}

fd=\frac{0.29}{17000}

fd=1.7058\times 10^{-5}\ L.hr^{-1}.cm(b)Surface area for a spherical animal:[tex]A=4.\pi.r^2

Diffusion flux rate for animal:

fd=\frac{14.5}{A}

1.7058\times 10^{-5}=\frac{14.5}{4.\pi.r^2}

r=26.008\ cm

Which has zero acceleration?
Llana [10]

At rest, when travelling at a constant speed, and when in mechanical equilibrium, there is no acceleration and answer choice D is correct.

<h3>How would you define acceleration?</h3>

In mechanics, acceleration describes the rate at which a driving object's velocity changes over time. They are accelerations and vector quantities. The direction of an object's acceleration is determined by the direction of the net force acting on it. Depending on whether an object is moving faster, slower, or in a different direction, its velocity may change. Examples of acceleration include a falling apple, the moon orbiting the earth, and a car that has stopped at a stop sign. The car is positively accelerating if the speed is increasing. As the car slows down, its speed decreases. A decline in speed is referred to as negative acceleration. In both situations, the car is traveling ahead, yet one has a positive acceleration and the other a negative one.
