Using a refracting telescope, you observe the planet Mars when it is 1.99×1011 m from Earth. The diameter of the telescope's obj
Rudik [331]

The minimum feature size, in kilometers, on the surface of Mars that your telescope can resolve for you is 140km.

What is telescope?

Telescope is device through which we can see the distant objects very clearly as it seems like they are some meters away.

Distance of the Mars from the Earth D = 1.99 x 10¹¹ m

Diameter of telescope's objective lens d = 0.977 m

The wavelength of light λ in m, λ = 563nm = 563 x 10⁻⁹ m

The distance y or the minimum feature size =1.22λD/d

Substitute the value, we get

y = 1.22 x 563 x 10⁻⁹ x 1.99 x 10¹¹ /0.977

y = 140 km (approximately)

Thus, the minimum feature size, in kilometers, on the surface of Mars that your telescope can resolve for you is 140km.

IrinaK [193]
Answer: 0.0138 m^2 = 138 cm^2

Explanation:

The thermal expansion is the term use for the physical phenomena of dilation of the objects when they are exposed to changes in temperature.

The objects dilate when they are heated and contract when they are cooled.

The dilation is proportional to the change in temperatur.

For linear dilation, the proportionality constant is called linear dilation coefficient of the materials, it is named α and is measured in °C ^-1.

ΔL = α * Lo * ΔT, which means that the dilation (or contraction) is proportional to the product of the original length (Lo) and the change of temperature (ΔT).

There is also superficial dilation, for which the dilation is:

ΔA = β * Ao * ΔT, which means that the superficial dilation (or contraction) is proportional to the product of the original area (Ao) and the change of temperature (ΔT).

It is very interesting and important to solve problems that β = 2α, because regularly you will find the values of α for different materials and so, you just to multiply it times 2 to use β.

For this problem:

- Original area, Ao = area of the flat roof at - 10°C = 2.0m * 3.0m = 6.0 m^2.
- α for aluminum = 24 * 10^ -6 °C^-1.
- ΔT = 38°C - (-10°C) = 48°C

So, ΔA = 6.0m^2 * (2 * 24*10^-6 °C&-1) * 48°C = 0.0138 m^2

And that is the area that should stick out in summer to fit the structure during cold winter nights.

You can pass that number to cm^2 to grasp better the idea of this size:

0.0138 m^2 * (100 cm)^2 / m^2 = 138 cm^2

The ball X has a known position at 3 different times, each 1 second apart. The positions of the ball are (1.8,2.2)m, (4.4,4.8)m,
Mandarinka [93]

Answer:

Explanation:

From the position coordinates given , it appears that the ball moves simultaneously along x and y direction.

Displacement along x direction in one second = 4.4 - 1.8 = 2.6 m

So velocity along x direction V_x = \frac{2.6}{s}

Similarly velocity along y direction V_y(1) = \frac{2.6}{s}

In the next phase velocity changes both in x and y direction.

velocity in x - direction V_x(2) = [tex]\frac{2}{s}[/tex

Velocity in Y- direction V_y(2) = [tex]\frac{3.1}{s}[/tex

Acceleration in x direction = change of velocity in x direction

= ( 2 - 2.6 ) = -.6 m s⁻²

Acceleration in y direction = ( 3.1 - 2.6 ) = 0.5 m s⁻²

Total acceleration =\sqrt{( -.6 )² + ( .5 )²}

= .78 ms⁻²

Why does a lunar eclipse last for a few hours whereas a solar eclipse only lasts for a few minutes?
Aneli [31]

Answer:

The type and length of a lunar eclipse depend on the Moon's proximity to either node of its orbit. ... A total lunar eclipse can last up to nearly 2 hours, while a total solar eclipse lasts only up to a few minutes at any given place, due to the smaller size of the Moon's shadow.
