A rigid 7.80 L sealed vessel containing 2.700 mol of O2(g), 0.600 mol of C2H4(g), and 2.400 mol of Ne(g) has an internal tempera

ture of 85.0∘C
a. Calculate the total pressure in the cylinder.
b. Find the mole fraction of O2 in the vessel.
c. A lab technician ignites the mixture in the vessel and the following reaction occurs:

C2H4(g)+3O2(g)→2CO2(g)+2H2O(g)

Answer:

a. 21.46atm

b. 0.4737

c.

Mole fraction O2 = 0.1579

Mole fraction CO2 = 0.2105

Mole fraction H2O 0.2105

Mole fraction Ne = 0.4211

Explanation:

a. To solve the total pressure of the cylinder we need to use:

PV = nRT

<em>Where P is pressure: Our incognite</em>

<em>V is volume: 7.80L</em>

<em>n are total moles: 2.700mol + 0.600mol + 2.400mol = 5.700moles</em>

<em>R is gas constant: 0.082atmL/molK</em>

<em>And T is absolute temperature in K: 85°C + 273.15 = 358.15K</em>

P = nRT/V

P = 5.700mol*0.082atmL/molK*358.15K/7.80L

P = 21.46atm

b. Mole fraction of O2 is the ratio of moles of O2 (2.700mol) over total moles of the mixture (5.700mol).

Mole fraction = 2.700mol / 5.700mol = 0.4737

c. In the reaction:

C2H4(g)+3O2(g)→2CO2(g)+2H2O(g)

For a complete reaction of the 0.600mol of C2H4 there are required:

0.600mol C2H4 * (3 mol O2 / 1mol C2H4) = 1.800 moles of O2

As there are 2.700moles of O2, will remain:

2.700 - 1.800 = 0.900moles of O2

All C2H4 is consumed because is limitng reactant and there are produced:

0.600mol C2H4 * (2 mol CO2 / 1mol C2H4) = 1.200 moles of CO2

0.600mol C2H4 * (2 mol H2O / 1mol C2H4) = 1.200 moles of H2O

And 2.400 mol of Ne that doesn't react.

Total moles are:

0.900mol + 1.200mol + 1.200mol + 2.400mol = 5.700mol

Mole fraction O2 = 0.900mol / 5.700mol = 0.1579

Mole fraction CO2 = 1.200mol / 5.700mol = 0.2105

Mole fraction H2O = 1.200mol / 5.700mol = 0.2105

Mole fraction Ne = 2.400mol / 5.700mol = 0.4211

Explain how the scientific method helps scientists.
Lapatulllka [165]

As scientists work hard for the results, they may get biased and may sometimes come up with an answer that is based on that. In order to avoid such circumstances, scientific method is put into practice.

Explanation:

  • Personal preferences can some times affect a scientific answer. That is not desirable as the experiments will be repeated by different individuals and the same results should be obtained.
  • That leads to the importance of documentation of systemic observation, formation of hypothesis and the experimentation to confirm the results, which is the scientific way of coming up with the answer to a scientific problem.
  • Scientific methods thus helps in bringing more credibility to findings of the scientists and can be repeated by others to obtain the same results.

Potassium permanganate, KMnO, and glycerin, C3H5(OH)3, react explosively according to the
Finger [1]

The volume of CO2 at STP =124.298 L

<h3>Further explanation</h3>

Given

Reaction

4 KMnO4, +4 C3H5(OH)5, -7K2CO3, + 7 Mn2O3, +5 CO2, + 16 H2O

701,52 g of KMnO4

Required

volume of CO2 at STP

Solution

mol KMnO4 (MW=158,034 g/mol) :

mol = mass : MW

mol = 701.52 : 158.034

mol = 4.439

mol CO2 from equation : 5/4 x mol KMnO4 = 5/4 x 4.439 = 5.549

At STP 1 mol = 22.4 L, so for 5.549 moles :

=5.549 x 22.4

=124.298 L

Consider stoichiometric combustion of gasoline and air. Assume a full tank of gasoline holds 50 L (approximately 13.2 gallons),
Inessa05 [86]

Answer:

520 kg

Explanation:

Let's consider the combustion of isooctane.

C₈H₁₈(l) + 12.5 O₂(g) → 8 CO₂(g) +  9 H₂O(l)

We can establish the following relations:

  • 1 mL of C₈H₁₈ has a mass of 0.690 g (ρ = 0.690 g/mL).
  • The molar mass of C₈H₁₈ is 114.22 g/mol.
  • The molar ratio of C₈H₁₈ to O₂ is 1:12.5.
  • The mole fraction of O₂ in air is 0.21.
  • The molar mass of air is 28.96 g/mol.

50 L of isooctane require the following mass of air.

50 \times 10^{3}mLC_{8}H_{18}.\frac{0.690gC_{8}H_{18}}{1mLC_{8}H_{18}} .\frac{1molC_{8}H_{18}}{114.22gC_{8}H_{18}} .\frac{12.5molO_{2}}{1molC_{8}H_{18}} .\frac{1molAir}{0.21molO_{2}} .\frac{28.96 \times 10^{-3}kgAir}{1molAir} =520kgAir
