The Point Guard or Playmaker is the player with the best skill with the ball and who controls the rhythm of the game.

In basketball, the playing positions are generally divided into two groups that are:

  • Interiors: An interior game is called that which is developed from spaces very close to the rim (approximately 4 or 5 meters)
  • Exteriors: An outside game is called that which is generated in distant rim spaces (beyond the 6.75-meter line)

Within this classification, the interior and exterior positions have been subdivided as follows:

  • Outside positions: Point guard, shooting guard, and small forward.
  • Inside positions: power forward and center.

The Point Guard is in charge of directing the game. Generally, he moves the ball from one court to another to get it into play as soon as possible. His functions are:

  • Organize
  • Direct
  • Control the rhythm of the game
  • Depending on the game situation

His usual playing area is the central perimeter area. This player must be characterized by:

  • Good peripheral vision.
  • Great ability to go indoors and outdoors, overlong and short distances.
  • The great skill with the ball.
  • A lot of agility of feet and hands to defend.
