The species which gives OH⁻ ion is known as Arrhenius base.

What are Arrhenius bases?

Arrhenius bases are those species which are giving hydroxide ion (OH⁻) in an aqueous solution.

Properties of Arrhenius bases are:

 • They are bitter in taste.
 • Converts red litmus paper to blue color.
 • Have pH value in the range of 7.1 to 14.

Examples of Arrhenius bases are sodium hydroxide (NaOH), potassium hydroxide (KOH), etc.

Hence, Arrhenius bases gives OH⁻ in an aqueous solution and NaOH is an example of this.
