In 1945, the United States tested the world’s first atomic bomb in what was called the Trinity test. Following the test, images

were published showing the evolution of the blast. A few years later, a British Scientist, by the name of G. I. Taylor, used dimensional analysis to predict the amount of energy released by the Trinity explosion, which was still classified information at the time. He did so, just by analyzing the images alone. He assumed the blast radius, R, depended only on the evolution time, t, the energy released, E, and the density of air, rho. Using the Buckingham-Pi theorem, find the dimensionless group, Π1 = k, where k is a constant. Assuming k = 1, find the energy released, in tons of TNT, if the radius of the blast wave at t = 0.025s is R = 140m. Take the density of air to be rho = 1.2kg/m3. Note, there are 4.184 × 109J per ton of TNT equivalent.

Answer:

r=K A^{1/5} \rho^{-1/5} t^{2/5}

A= \frac{r^5 \rho}{t^2}

A=1.033x10^{21} ergs *\frac{Kg TNT}{4x10^{10} erg}=2.58x10^{10} Kg TNT

Explanation:

Notation

In order to do the dimensional analysis we need to take in count that we need to conditions:

a) The energy A is released in a small place

b) The shock follows a spherical pattern

We can assume that the size of the explosion r is a function of the time t, and depends of A (energy), the time (t) and the density of the air is constant \rho_{air}.

And now we can solve the dimensional problem. We assume that L is for the distance T for the time and M for the mass.

[r]=L with r representing the radius

[A]= \frac{ML^2}{T^2} A represent the energy and is defined as the mass times the velocity square, and the velocity is defined as \frac{L}{T}

[t]=T represent the time

[\rho]=\frac{M}{L^3} represent the density.

Solution to the problem

And if we analyze the function for r we got this:

[r]=L=[A]^x [\rho]^y [t]^z

And if we replpace the formulas for each on we got:

[r]=L =(\frac{ML^2}{T^2})^x (\frac{M}{L^3})^y (T)^z

And using algebra properties we can express this like that:

[r]=L=M^{x+y} L^{2x-3y} T^{-2x+z}

And on this case we can use the exponents to solve the values of x, y and z. We have the following system.

x+y =0 , 2x-3y=1, -2x+z=0

We can solve for x like this x=-y and replacing into quation 2 we got:

2(-y)-3y = 1

-5y = 1

y= -\frac{1}{5}

And then we can solve for x and we got:

x = -y = -(-\frac{1}{5})=\frac{1}{5}

And if we solve for z we got:

z=2x =2 \frac{1}{5}=\frac{2}{5}

And now we can express the radius in terms of the dimensional analysis like this:

r=K A^{1/5} \rho^{-1/5} t^{2/5}

And K represent a constant in order to make the porportional relation and equality.

The problem says that we can assume the constant K=1.

And if we solve for the energy we got:

A^{1/5}=\frac{r}{t^{2/5} \rho^{-1/5}}

A= \frac{r^5 \rho}{t^2}

And now we can replace the values given. On this case t =0.025 s, the radius r =140 m, and the density is a constant assumed \rho =1.2 kg/m^2, and replacing we got:

A=\frac{140^5 1.2 kg/m^3}{(0.025 s)^2}=1.033x10^{14} \frac{kg m^2}{s^2}

And we can convert this into ergs we got:

A= 1.033x10^{14} \frac{kgm^2}{s^2} * \frac{1 x10^7 egrs}{1 \frac{kgm^2}{s^2}}=1.033x10^{21} ergs

And then we know that 1 g of TNT have 4x10^4 erg

And we got:

A=1.033x10^{21} ergs *\frac{Kg TNT}{4x10^{10} erg}=2.58x10^{10} Kg TNT

A strain gage is mounted at an angle of 30° with respect to the longitudinal axis of the cylindrical pressure. The pressure vess
GuDViN [60]

Answer:

1790 μrad.

Explanation:

Young's modulus, E is given as 10000 ksi,

μ is given as 0.33,

Inside diameter, d = 54 in,

Thickness, t = 1 in,

Pressure, p = 794 psi = 0.794 ksi

To determine shear strain, longitudinal strain and circumferential strain will be evaluated,

Longitudinal strain, eL = (pd/4tE)(1 - 2μ)

eL = (0.794 x 54)(1 - 0.66)/(4 x 1 x 10000)

eL = 3.64 x 10-⁴ radians

Circumferential strain , eH = (pd/4tE)(2-μ)

eH = (0.794 x 54)(2 - 0.33)/(4 x 1 x 10000)

eH = 1.79 x 10-³ radians

The maximum shear strain is 1790 μrad.

Define waves as it applies to electromagnetic fields
julsineya [31]

Waves in the electric and magnetic fields are known as electromagnetic waves. You must first understand what a field is, which is just a technique of giving each square inch of space a numerical value. You may see that as a temperature field, for instance, when you look at the weather predictions and they mention the temperature in several locations. Every location on Earth has a unique temperature that can be quantified. Everywhere on Earth has its own wind velocity, which is another form of field. This field differs somewhat from the temperature field in that the wind velocity has both a direction and a magnitude, whereas the temperature just has a magnitude (how hot it is). A vector is a quantity that has both magnitude and direction, hence a field that contains vectors at every location is referred to as a vector field. Vector fields include the magnetic and electric fields. We may examine what would happen if we placed a charged particle at any given position in space. If the charged particle were to accelerate, we would state that the electric field there is the direction in which the particle is moving. In general, positively charged particles will move in the electric field's direction, whereas negatively charged particles will move in the opposite way. Because it is a vector field, the magnetic field exhibits comparable behavior. We discovered in the 19th century that the same interaction, electromagnetism, really produces both electric and magnetic fields. Like an electromagnet, a changing electric field will produce a magnetic field, and a changing magnetic field will induce an electric field (like in a generator). If your system is configured properly, you may have an electric field that fluctuates, which in turn produces a magnetic field, which in turn induces another electric field, which in turn generates another magnetic field, and so on indefinitely. At the speed of light, this oscillation between a strong magnetic field and strong electric field spreads out indefinitely. In reality, light is an electromagnetic wave—an oscillation in the electromagnetic fields. An electric or magnetic field may exist without a medium since they exist in a vacuum, which implies that waves in these fields don't require a medium like sound to flow through.

An aluminium alloy tube has a length of 750 mm at a temperature of 223°C. What will be its length at 23°C if its coefficient of
uranmaximum [27]

Answer:

Final length= 746.175 mm

Explanation:

Given that Length of aluminium at 223 C is 750 mm.As we know that when temperature of material increases or decreases then dimensions of material also increases or decreases respectively with temperature.

Here temperature of aluminium decreases so the final length of aluminium decreases .

As we know that

\Delta L=L\alpha\Delta T

Now by putting the values

\Delta L=750\times \25.5\times 10^{-6}\times 200

ΔL=3.82 mm

So final length =750-3.82 mm

Final length= 746.175 mm
