The student is now told that the four solids, in no particular order, are magnesium bromide (MgBr2), sugar (C6H12O6), butanoic a

cid (C3H7COOH), and potassium bromide (KBr). Assuming that conductivity is correlated to the number of ions in solution, rank the four substances based on how well a 0.20 M solution in water will conduct electricity.

Answer:

Magnesium chloride (MgCl₂) > Potassium bromide (KBr) > Butanoic acid (C₃H₇COOH) > Sugar (C₆H₁₂O₆)  (Conductivity)

Explanation:

The given samples:

<u>Magnesium chloride (MgCl₂):</u>

It is a strong salt which dissociates 100% into 3 ions, 1 Mg²⁺ and 2 Cl⁻

<u>Sugar (C₆H₁₂O₆):</u>

It is a carbohydrate and will have 0% dissociation and thus, no ions.

<u>Butanoic acid (C₃H₇COOH):</u>

It is a carboxylic acid (weak acids) which partially dissociates.

<u>Potassium bromide (KBr):</u>

It is a strong salt which dissociates 100% into 2 ions, K⁺ and Br⁻.

Thus, Conductivity is directly proportional to the numbers of ions dissociated in the solution and hence will conduct more electricity.

So,

<u>Magnesium chloride (MgCl₂) > Potassium bromide (KBr) > Butanoic acid (C₃H₇COOH) > Sugar (C₆H₁₂O₆)  (Conductivity)</u>

What do cations and anions form?
melomori [17]

Answer: Cations (positively-charged ions) and anions (negatively-charged ions) are formed when a metal loses electrons, and a nonmetal gains those electrons. The electrostatic attraction between the positives and negatives brings the particles together and creates an ionic compound, such as sodium chloride.

What is the freezing point of an aqueous glucose solution that has 25.0 g of glucose?
LiRa [457]

Answer:

T_f=-2.58\°C

Explanation:

Hello,

In this case, we can compute the the freezing point depression by using the following formula:

T_f-T_0=-i*m*Kf

Whereas the freezing point of pure water is 0 °C van't Hoff factor for glucose is 1, the molality is computed as shown below and the freezing point constant of water is 1.86 °C/m:

m=\frac{25.0g\ glucose*\frac{1mol\ glucose}{180g\ glucose} }{100g*\frac{1kg}{1000g} }\\ \\m=1.39m

Thus, the freezing point of the solution is:

T_f=T_0-i*m*Kf\\\\T_f=0\°C-1*1.39m*1.86\frac{\°C}{m}\\ \\T_f=-2.58\°C

Regards.

Identify the intermediate in the halogenation of alkanes.a) Anionb) Cationc) Radicald) Dimer
Alex_Xolod [135]

Answer: Option C - Radical

Explanation:

A radical is a chemical specie carrying a lone electron. In the halogenation of alkanes: take Methane CH4 as the alkane, and Chlorine Cl as the halogen.

The step by step halogenation process is as follows:

CH4 + Cl2 --> CH3• + HCl + Cl•

CH3• + Cl2 --> CH3Cl + HCl

CH3Cl + Cl2 --> CH2Cl2 + HCl + Cl•

CH2Cl2 + Cl2 --> CHCl3 + HCl

CHCl3 + Cl2 --> CCl4 + HCl + Cl•

Chlorine molecule attack methane knocking off an hydrogen atom from it and forming a methyl radical (CH3•), that is subsequently attack by another chlorine molecule. This cycle repeats itself, until no hydrogen atom is available for substitution by the highly reactive chlorine radical.

Note: no cation or anion is formed in the halogenation process
