A sand has a natural water content of 5% and bulk unit weight of 18.0 kN/m3. The void ratios corresponding to the densest and lo

osest state of this soil are 0.51 and 0.87. Find the relative density and degree of saturation.

Answer:

Relative density = 0.545

Degree of saturation = 24.77%

Explanation:

Data provided in the question:

Water content, w = 5%

Bulk unit weight = 18.0 kN/m³

Void ratio in the densest state, e_{min} = 0.51

Void ratio in the loosest state, e_{max} = 0.87

Now,

Dry density, \gamma_d=\frac{\gamma_t}{1+w}

=\frac{18}{1+0.05}

= 17.14 kN/m³

Also,

\gamma_d=\frac{G\gamma_w}{1+e}

here, G = Specific gravity = 2.7 for sand

17.14=\frac{2.7\times9.81}{1+e}

or

e = 0.545

Relative density = \frac{e_{max}-e}{e_{max}-e_{min}}

= \frac{0.87-0.545}{0.87-0.51}

= 0.902

Also,

Se = wG

here,

S is the degree of saturation

therefore,

S(0.545) = (0.05)()2.7

or

S = 0.2477

or

S = 0.2477 × 100% = 24.77%

When testing a compressor with an ohm meter, a technician read 2 ohms between the start terminal and the case of the compressor.
Gemiola [76]

Answer:

That there is a grounded winding

Explanation:

When the ohm meter is set to the maximum range, and a meter lead is placed on the compressor casing. A reading of any value on the ohm meter is an indication that the winding is grounded in which case it would be necessary to change the  compressor

The compressor terminals are covered with a shroud making it difficult to take measurements. To make it easier, the plug can extended with an extension wire.

Air is to be heated steadily by an 8-kW electric resistance heater as it flows through an insulated duct. If the air enters at 5
Furkat [3]

To solve this problem it is necessary to apply the concepts related to the heat exchange of a body.

By definition heat exchange in terms of mass flow can be expressed as

W = \dot{m}c_p \Delta T

Where

C_p = Specific heat

\dot{m}= Mass flow rate

\Delta T = Change in Temperature

Our values are given as

C_p = 1.005kJ/kgK \rightarrow Specific heat of air

T_1 = 50\°C

\dot{m} = 2kg/s

W = 8kW

From our equation we have that

W = \dot{m}c_p \Delta T

W = \dot{m}c_p (T_2-T_1)

Rearrange to find T_2

T_2 = \frac{W}{\dot{m}c_p}+T_1

Replacing

T_2 = \frac{8}{2*1.005}+(50+273)

T_2 = 326.98K \approx 53.98\°C

Therefore the exit temperature of air is 53.98°C

A strain gage is mounted at an angle of 30° with respect to the longitudinal axis of the cylindrical pressure. The pressure vess
GuDViN [60]

Answer:

1790 μrad.

Explanation:

Young's modulus, E is given as 10000 ksi,

μ is given as 0.33,

Inside diameter, d = 54 in,

Thickness, t = 1 in,

Pressure, p = 794 psi = 0.794 ksi

To determine shear strain, longitudinal strain and circumferential strain will be evaluated,

Longitudinal strain, eL = (pd/4tE)(1 - 2μ)

eL = (0.794 x 54)(1 - 0.66)/(4 x 1 x 10000)

eL = 3.64 x 10-⁴ radians

Circumferential strain , eH = (pd/4tE)(2-μ)

eH = (0.794 x 54)(2 - 0.33)/(4 x 1 x 10000)

eH = 1.79 x 10-³ radians

The maximum shear strain is 1790 μrad.

Two technicians are discussing the intake air temperature (IAT) sensor. Technician A says that the computer uses the IAT sensor
mart [117]

Both the technicians are correct.

Explanation

Intake air temperature sensor is used in engines of vehicles to monitor the temperature of air entering the engine.

They are basically made of thermistors whose electrical resistance changes according to temperature.

Depending upon the reading and accuracy of intake air temperature sensor, the power-train control module (PCM) will decide about the air and fuel mixture ratio in the engine.

The hot air in engine requires less fuel to operate the engine parts while cold air requires more fuel to operate the engine.

The ratio of air and fuel mixture should be maintained in the engine and it is done by PCM only after getting the input from IAT. So technician B is saying correct.

Also the IAT works as a backup to support the engine coolant temperature sensor by the computer.

As the IAT checks the temperature of outside air, it will help to change the coolant temperature of the engine based on the environment.

Thus technician A is also correct. So both the technicians are correct.
