Soil is to be excavated from a borrow pit to construct a 100-m-long trapezoidal levee that is 3 meters high, 5 meters wide at th

e top, and 15 meters wide at the base. The in situ total unit weight of the soil in the borrow pit is 21.7 kN/m3 with a water content of 11.4%. If levee construction requires the soil to be placed at a void ratio of 0.47, determine the volume that should be excavated from the borrow pit.

Answer:

The answer is 2217.32m³

Explanation:

Given that:

V₂  = (15 + 5/2) * 3 * 100 = 3000 m³

r₁ = 21.7kN/m3

w (water) = 11.4%.

e₂ (void ratio) = 0.47

V₁ = ?

Now,

rd₁ =  r₁/1 + w₁ = 21.7/1 +(11.4/100)

= 19.47 kN/m3

Thus,

rd₂ = r₁/1 + e₂ = 21.7/1+ 0.47 = 14.76 kN/m3

Then,

V₁/V₂ = rd₁/ rd₂

V₁ = 3000 * 14.76/19.97

V₁ = 2217.32m³

Therefore, volume that should be excavated from the borrow pit is 2217.32m³

Why do engineers play a variety of roles in the engineering process?
Crazy boy [7]

Answer: The engineering design process emphasizes open-ended problem solving and encourages students to learn from failure. This process nurtures students abilities to create innovative solutions to challenges in any subject! In addition to their involvement in design and development, many engineers work in testing, production, or maintenance. These engineers supervise production in factories, determine the causes of a component's failure, and test manufactured products to maintain quality.

Water vapor at 5 bar, 320°C enters a turbine operating at steady state with a volumetric flow rate of 0.65 m3/s and expands adia
harina [27]

Answer:

Power = 371.28 kW

Explanation:

Initial pressure, P1 = 5 bar

Final pressure, P2 = 1 bar

Initial temperature, T1 = 320°C

Final temperature, T2 = 160°C

Volume flow rate, V = 0.65m³/s

From steam tables at state 1,

h1 = 3105.6 kJ/kg, s1 = 7.5308 kJ/kgK

v1 = 0.5416 m³/kg

Mass flow rate, m = V/v1

m = 1.2 kg/s

From steam tables, at state 2

h2 = 2796.2 kJ/kg, s2 = 7.6597 kJ/kgK

Power developed, P = m(h1 - h2)

P = 1.2(3105.6-2796.2)

P = 371.28 kW
