Answer: The pair of valence electrons that do not participate in the bonding are lone pairs.

Explanation:

There are 2 types of pair of electrons that are studied in the bonding. They are:

  • Bonding pairs: These pair of electrons participate in the bond formation. They exist as bonds in a molecule. They are also known as bond pairs.
  • Non-bonding pairs: These pair of electrons do not participate in the bond formation. They exist as lone pairs in a molecule.

Oxygen is the 8th element of the periodic table having electronic configuration of 1s^22s^22p^4

Number of valence electrons = (2 + 4) = 6

Oxygen needs 2 electrons to complete its octet. When another oxygen combines, they share 2 electrons each forming a double bond.

The Lewis dot structure of oxygen molecule is given below.

Hence, the pair of valence electrons that do not participate in the bonding are lone pairs.

Answer:

Nonbonding pairs of electrons.

Explanation:

Both oxygen atoms in the diatomic molecule have two nonbonding pairs. This results in the oxygen molecule having a planar geometric shape. This is because nonbonding pairs repel each other are significant in determining the shape of a molecule.

2. Nitric oxide contains 46.66% nitrogen and 53.34% oxygen. Water contains 11.21% hydrogen and 88.79% oxygen. Ammonia contains 1
Mrrafil [7]

Answer:

The law of reciprocal proportions states that if two elements react individually with a given weight of a third element, the ratio of the masses with which they combine with the third element are either the same or a simple multiple of the ratio of the masses with which they combine with each other

The compounds formed includes;

1) Nitric oxide, NO

Nitrogen = 46.66% × 30.01 = 14

Oxygen = 53.34% × 30.01 = 16

2) Water, H₂O

Hydrogen = 11.21% × 18.01528 = 2

Oxygen = 88.79% × 18.01528 ≈ 16

3) Ammonia, NH₃

Hydrogen = 17.78% × 17.031 ≈ 3

Nitrogen = 82.22% × 17.031 ≈ 14

The ratio of nitrogen to oxygen in nitric oxide = 14:16 = 7:8

The ratio of nitrogen to hydrogen in ammonia = 14:3

The ratio in which hydrogen and oxygen combine with nitrogen = 3/16

The ratio of hydrogen and oxygen combine with each other in water = 2/16

Therefore, the ratio with which hydrogen and oxygen combine with nitrogen, is (2/3) times the ratio with which they combine with each other, which verifies the law of reciprocal proportions

A person tries to heat up her bath water by adding 5.0 l of water at 80c to 60 l of water at 30c. what is the final temperature
Sophie [7]
We can calculate the final temperature from this formula :

when Tf = (V1* T1) +(V2* T2) / (V1+ V2)

when V1 is the first volume of water = 5 L

and V2 is the second volume of water = 60 L

and T1 is the first temperature of water in Kelvin = 80 °C +273 = 353 K

and T2 is the second temperature of water in Kelvin =  30°C + 273= 303 K

and Tf is the final temperature of water in Kelvin

so, by substitution:

Tf = (5 L * 353 K ) + ( 60 L * 303 K) / ( 5 L + 60 L)

     = 1765 + 18180 / 65 L

     = 306 K
     = 306 -273 = 33° C
