A carpenter is driving a 15.0-g steel nail into a board. His 1.00-kg hammer is moving at 8.50 m/s when it strikes the nail. Half

of the kinetic energy of the hammer is transformed into heat in the nail and does not flow out of the nail. What is the increase in temperature of the nail after the three blows that the carpenter needs to drive the nail in completely? The specific heat of steel is 448 J/kg ∙ K.
a) 2.7 K
b) 1.8 K
c) 7.7 K

Answer: The increase in temperature of the nail after the three blows is 8.0636 Kelvins. The correct option is (d).

Explanation:

Kinetic energy of the hammer ,K.E.=

\frac{1}{2}mv^2=\frac{1}{2}1.00 kg\times (8.50 m/s)^2=36.125 J

Half of the kinetic energy of the hammer is transformed into heat in the nail.

Energy transferred to the nail in one blow =

\frac{1}{2}K.E.=\frac{1}{2}\times 36.125 J=18.0625 J

Total energy transferred after 3 blows,Q =3\times 18.0625 J=54.1875 J

Mass of the nail = 15 g = 0.015 kg

Change in temperature =\Delta T

Specif heat of the steel = c = 448 J/kg K

Q=mc\Delta T

54.1875 J=0.015 kg\times 448 J/kg K\times \Delta T

\Delta T=8.0636 K\approx 8.1 K

The increase in temperature of the nail after the three blows is 8.1  Kelvins.Hence, correct option is (d).

Two equal forces are applied to a door. The first force is applied at the midpoint of the door, the second force is applied at t
Orlov [11]

Answer:

D) the second at the doorknob

Explanation:

The torque exerted by a force is given by:

\tau = Fdsin \theta

where

F is the magnitude of the force

d is the distance between the point of application of the force and the centre of rotation

\theta is the angle between the direction of the force and d

In this problem, we have:

- Two forces of equal magnitude F

- Both forces are perpendicular to the door, so \theta=90^{\circ}, sin \theta=1

- The first force is exerted at the midpoint of the door, while the 2nd force is applied at the doorknob. This means that d is the larger for the 2nd force

--> therefore, the 2nd force exerts a greater torque

A block slides down a slope inclined at 37 degrees. If the slope is frictionless and the block starts off at rest, how fast is i
lianna [129]

Answer:

Vf= 3.435 m/s

Explanation:

Given:

Initial velocity Vi =0 m/s (starting from Rest position)

θ = 37⁰

Distance S = 1 m

To find: Final Velocity Vf=?

fist we have to find the down slope net acceleration a = g sin θ

a= 9.81 sin  37⁰ = 5.9 m/s²

By 3rd equation of motion

2 a S= Vf² - Vi²

Vf = Square root ( 2 × 5.9 m/s²  × 1  + 0 m/s)

Vf = Square root (11.8)

Vf= 3.435 m/s

A typical neutron star may have a mass equal to that of the Sun but a radius of only 20 km.(a) What is the gravitational acceler
Pepsi [2]

Answer:

331665750000\ m/s^2

3257806.62409 m/s

Explanation:

G = Gravitational constant = 6.67 × 10⁻¹¹ m³/kgs²

M = Mass of Sun = 1.989\times 10^{30}\ kg

r = Radius of Star = 20 km

u = Initial velocity = 0

v = Final velocity

s = Displacement = 16 m

a = Acceleration

Gravitational acceleration is given by

g=\dfrac{GM}{r^2}\\\Rightarrow g=\dfrac{6.67\times 10^{-11}\times 1.989\times 10^{30}}{20000^2}\\\Rightarrow g=331665750000\ m/s^2

The gravitational acceleration at the surface of such a star is 331665750000\ m/s^2

v^2-u^2=2as\\\Rightarrow v=\sqrt{2as+u^2}\\\Rightarrow v=\sqrt{2\times 331665750000\times 16+0^2}\\\Rightarrow v=3257806.62409\ m/s

The velocity of the object would be 3257806.62409 m/s
