Answer:

Science experiment: Inclined plane

(Your name)

8th grade AP Science

(Teachers name)

(todays date or due date)

Hypothesis:

If the height of the inclined plane increases, then the IMA, AMA will increase And efficiency will decrease. This will be because a sharper incline will require more energy over a shorter distance than a shallow incline.

Trial: 1

Height: 11.15 Cm

Length: 56.60 Cm

Mass: 500 g (4.90 N)

Effort Force: 1.35 N

AMA: 3.63

IMA: 5.08

Efficiency: 71.46

Trial: 2

Height: 17.40 Cm

Length: 56.60 Cm

Mass: 500 g (4.90 N)

Effort force: 1.75 N

AMA: 2.80

IMA: 3.25

Efficiency: 86.15

Questions for “presenting your outcome”:

How does the length to height ratio (the IMA) of trial 1 compare to trial 2?

Why is the actual mechanical advantage less than the ideal mechanical advantage in each of the trials?

If a machine was 100% efficient, how would the AMA compare to the IMA?

Answers to those questions:

1: The IMA in trial 1 is greater than in trial 2 because an inclined plane with a shallower rise will have a higher ideal mechanical advantage because less effort can be applied over a greater distance in a shallow rise than in a steep one.

2: IMA of an inclined plane does not account for things like gravity weighing an object down and friction being generated between the object and the plane, among other factors. Because both of the listed factors are things that we know will affect the object being moved up the inclined plane, we can predict that the AMA will be lower because outside factors acting on the object make the inclined plane less efficient.

3: If a machine was 100% efficient, the IMA and AMA would be congruent. This is because for a medicine to be 100% efficient there would have to be no outside forces acting on the object. The ideal mechanical advantage does not calculate for outside forces, so with a machine having to be a place where exactly 0 outsides forces are present to be working at 100% efficiency, then common logic would say that the IMA and AMA would have to be the exact same.

Questions for the “answer portion of the assignment”:

According to your data, was your hypothesis correct? (Be sure to refer to your data when answering this question.)

Summarize the conclusions that you can draw from this experiment. Use the questions above to guide your ideas.

Summarize any difficulties or problems you had in performing the experiment that might have affected the results. Describe how you might change the procedure to avoid these problems.

Give at least three examples from everyday life where an inclined plane is used to reduce the effort force needed to accomplish a task.

We're adding two vectors here.  The first is 300 Newtons to the right, which we can write as (300, 0), meaning 300 to the right, 0 up.

The second is 300 at let's say a 45 degree angle down.  For the components we have an isosceles right triangle with hypotenuse 300, so the components are both magnitude 300/√2 = 150√2.  So we can write this vector (150√2, -150√2), the negative sign because it points down in the y direction.

Adding is componentwise.  The resulting force is (300+150√2, -150√2).

That has square magnitude

r² = (300+150√2)² + (-150√2)² = 150² ( (2+√2)² + (√2)² )

= 150²( (6 + 4√2) + 2)

= 300²(2+√2)

so

r = 300 √(2+√2) Newtons

That's the answer; I'm not sure if your class expects a calculator approximation, which is 554.3 Newtons.

Why did thomson’s results from experimenting with cathode rays cause a big change in scientific thought about atoms?
natima [27]

Answer:

Explanation:

Before Thomson's discovery, atoms were believed according to the "Dalton's atomic theory" to be the smallest indivisible particle of any matter. This makes atoms the smallest unit of a matter.

Thomson in 1897, used the discharge tube to discover cathode rays which are today called electrons.

The discovery of electrons provided more light into the structure and nature of atoms. Atoms were now being seen in a different light as particles that are made up of other smaller sized particles.

Thomson through his experiment was able determine perfectly well the nature of the rays he saw emanating from the cathode. One of his findings shows that the rays are negatively charged and are repelled by negative charges.

The discovery of electrons further led to more works on the atom and other particles were discovered. Atoms were no longer seen as indivisible or the smallest particles of matter.
