If we use 100 grams of compound:
m(C) = 0,7787 · 100 g = 77,87 g.
n(C) = 77,87 g ÷ 12 g/mol = 6,49 mol.
m(H) = 0,0263 · 100 g = 2,63 g.
n(H) = 2,63 g ÷ 1 g/mol = 2,63 mol.
m(O) = 0,5562 · 100 g = 55,62 g.
n(O) = 55,62 g ÷ 16 g/mol = 3,48 mol.
n(C) : n(H) : n(O) = 6,49 mol : 2,63 mol : 3,48 mol.
n(C) : n(H) : n(O) = 2,5 : 1 : 1,33.
From molecular mass only possible is C₁₂H₉O₁₂.

Answer:

In order to find the molecular formula from an empirical formula you must find the ratio of their molecular masses.

We know that the molecular mass of the molecule is 70

gmol-1

. We can calculate the molar mass of

CH2

from the periodic table:

C=12.01

gmol−1

H=1.01

gmol−1

CH2 =14.03

gmol−1

Hence we can find the ratio:

14.03

70

≈

0.2

Why is it important to start at the zero mark of a ruler/meterstick + triple beam balance when making measurements?
sergeinik [125]
Because if you start at one for example you starting at a extra cm/m/mm. So when you get your measurement result it will be wrong by just one cm/m/mm. Hope this wasn't too confusing.
