N: +5 ⟶ +2; Change =  -3

P: +3 ⟶ +5; Change = +2

Step 3. Equalize the changes in oxidation number.

You need 3 atoms of P for every 2 atoms of N. This gives us total changes of +6 and -6.

Step 4. Insert coefficients to get these numbers.

2HNO₃ + 3H₃PO₃ ⟶ 2NO + 3H₃PO₄ + H₂O

Step 5. Balance O.
