A student determines the heat of dissolution of solid potassium perchlorate using a coffee-cup calorimeter of negligible heat ca

pacity. When 1.69 g of KClO4(s) is dissolved in 102.00 g of water, the temperature of the solution drops from 25.00 to 23.48 °C. Based on the student's observation, calculate the enthalpy of dissolution of KClO4(s) in kJ/mol. Assume the specific heat of the solution is 4.184 J/g°C. ΔHdissolution = kJ/mol

Answer : The enthalpy change of dissolution of KClO_4 is -54.0 kJ/mole

Explanation :

q=m\times c\times \Delta T

where,

q = heat released by the solution

c = specific heat of water = 4.184J/g^oC

m = mass of solution = mass of water + mass of KClO_4 = 102.00 + 1.69 = 103.69 g

\Delta T = change in temperature = T_2-T_1=(25.00-23.48)=1.52^oC

Now put all the given values in the above formula, we get:

q=103.69g\times 4.184J/g^oC\times 1.52^oC

q=659.4J=0.659kJ

Now we have to calculate the enthalpy change of dissolution of KClO_4

\Delta H=-\frac{q}{n}

where,

\Delta H = enthalpy change of dissolution = ?

q = heat released = 0.659 kJ

m = mass of KClO_4 = 1.69 g

Molar mass of KClO_4 = 138.55 g/mol

\text{Moles of }KClO_4=\frac{\text{Mass of }KClO_4}{\text{Molar mass of }KClO_4}=\frac{1.69g}{138.55g/mole}=0.0122mole

\Delta H=-\frac{0.659kJ}{0.0122mole}=-54.0kJ/mole

Therefore, the enthalpy change of dissolution of KClO_4 is -54.0 kJ/mole

What is the weighted average of a nail in the sample data given?
Natalka [10]

The weighted average of the nail in accordance with the given data is 11.176g.

<h3>How to calculate weighted average?</h3>

Weighted average is an arithmetic mean of values biased according to agreed weightings.

The weighted average of the nail in the image above can be calculated by multiplying the decimal abundance with the mass of the nail, then summed up as follows;

Weighted average = (decimal abundance × mass 1) + (decimal abundance × mass 2)

Weighted average = (0.12 × 3.3) + (0.88 × 12.25)

Weighted average = 0.396 + 10.78

Weighted average = 11.176g

Therefore, 11.176g is the weighted average of the nail

How does the appear from earth
san4es73 [151]

Answer:

Formation. When the solar system settled into its current layout about 4.5 billion years ago, Earth formed when gravity pulled swirling gas and dust in to become the third planet from the Sun. Like its fellow terrestrial planets, Earth has a central core, a rocky mantle and a solid crust.

X ml - <span>25% alcohol mixture
y ml - </span><span>90% alcohol mixture

x+y = 455

0.25x ml alcohol in </span>x ml of  25% alcohol mixture
0.9y ml alcohol in y ml of  90% alcohol mixture
0.75*455= 341.25 ml alcohol in 455 ml of  75% alcohol mixture

0.25x+0.9y=341.25

System of equations:

x+y = 455 /*(-0.25) ------> -0.25x-0.25y = -0.25*455
0.25x+0.9y=341.25

-0.25x-0.25y=-113.75
0.25x+0.9y=341.25    Add both equations

0.25x+0.9y-0.25x-0.25y=341.25-113.75
0.65y =227.5
y=227.5/0.65 = 350 ml  of  90% alcohol mixture

x+y=455
x+355=455
x=100 ml of  25% alcohol mixture

Why does bromine not react with sulphur?
Zielflug [23.3K]

Answer:

The thermodynamic parameter which is of significance in this case is the 'Reduction Potential' for molecular bromine which is ~ +1.1 v vs N.H.E. In other words, it is a strong oxidizing agent. The bromine will oxidize sulfur compounds in which the valence of sulfur is lower than six to sulfate.

There are many possible reactions. Here is one possible example:

Na2 S2O3 + 4Br2 + 5 H2O = 2NaHSO4 + 8 HBr
