In the presence of excess oxygen, methane gas burns in a constant-pressure system to yield carbon dioxide and water: CH4 (g) + 2

O2 (g) → CO2 (g) + 2H2O (l) ΔH = -890.0 kJ Calculate the value of q (kJ) in this exothermic reaction when 1.80 g of methane is combusted at constant pressure.

<u>Answer:</u> The value of q for the reaction will be -100.1 kJ

<u>Explanation:</u>

To calculate the number of moles, we use the equation:

\text{Number of moles}=\frac{\text{Given mass}}{\text{Molar mass}}

Given mass of methane = 1.80 g

Molar mass of methane = 16 g/mol

Putting values in above equation, we get:

\text{Moles of }CH_4=\frac{1.80g}{16g/mol}=0.1125mol

For the given chemical reaction:

CH_4(g)+2O_2(g)\rightarrow CO_2(g)+2H_2O(l);\Delta H^o_{rxn}=-890.0kJ

By Stoichiometry of the reaction:

When 1 mole of methane reacts, the heat released is 890.0 kJ

So, when 0.1125 moles of methane will react, the heat released will be \frac{890.0kJ}{1mol}\times 0.1125mol=100.1kJ

<u>Sign convention of heat (q):</u>

When heat is absorbed, the sign of heat is taken to be positive and when heat is released, the sign of heat is taken to be negative.

Hence, the value of q for the reaction will be -100.1 kJ

How many grams of water can be produce from the complete reaction of excess nitric acid and 33.2 mL of 0.245 M lithium hydroxide
Mariulka [41]

Mass of water produced : 0.146 g

<h3>Further explanation</h3>

Given

33.2 mL of 0.245 M lithium hydroxide

Required

mass of water

Solution

Reaction

HNO₃ (aq) + LiOH (aq) → H₂O (l) + LiNO₃ (aq)

mol LiOH :

= M x V

= 0.245 x 33.2 ml

= 8.134 mmol

From the equation, the mol ratio of HNO₃ : H₂O = 1 : 1, so mol H₂O = 8.134 mmol

mass H₂O :

= mol x MW

= 8.134 x 10⁻³ mol x 18 g/mol

= 0.146 g

What volume of so2 is produced at 325 k and 1.35 atm when 15.0 grams of hcl reacts with excess k2so3?
vova2212 [387]
The volume of SO2 produced at 325k   is calculated as  below

calculate  the moles of SO2 produced  which  is calculated as follows

write the  reacting equation
K2SO3 +2 HCl = 2KCl +H2O+ SO2

find the   moles  of  HCl  used
=mass/molar mass = 15g/ 36.5 g/mol =0.411 moles

by  use of mole ratio between  HCl to  SO2  which is  2:1 the moles of SO2 is therefore = 0.411 /2 =0.206  moles  of SO2

use the idea  gas  equation  to calculate the volume SO2
that is V=nRT/P
where  n=0.206  moles
          R(gas constant) = 0.082 L.atm/ mol.k
         T=325 K
          P=1.35 atm

V=(0.206 moles x  0.082 L.atm/mol.k x325 k)/1.35 atm = 4.07 L of SO2
