Commercially available cold packs are simple in design: a pouch with water on one side, isolated by a barrier from a specific sa

lt on the other side. When the barrier is broken, the salt and water mix and the solution turns cold. Select which of the statements is true about the reaction occurring in cold packs. O The reaction between the salt and water is endothermic. O The reaction between the salt and water is exothermic. O The reaction between the salt and water is neither endothermic nor exothermic. The cold pack releases heat into the environment. #8

Answer:

The reaction between the salt and water is endothermic

Explanation:

An endothermic reaction is one that absorbs heat from the surrounding creating a kind of coldness in the immediate environment of the reaction. The direct opposite of endothermic reaction is exothermic reaction, a reaction that dissipates heat to the immediate surrounding of the reaction.

Commercial cold packs works based on the principle of endothermic reaction. The packs are usually made up of water and ammonium nitrate salts isolated by easily breakable barriers. The dissolution of ammonium nitrate salts in water is generally endothermic.

In order to make use of the cold pack, a force needs to be applied to the pack in order to break the barrier separating the water and the ammonium salt. The water-ammonium salt mixture creates an endothermic reaction which immediately lowers the temperature of the resulting solution to about 35 F for a period of 10 to 15 minutes.

Answer:

The reaction between the salt and water is exothermic.

Explanation:

Because the cold pack releases heat.

storchak [24]
In a popular classroom demonstration, solid sodium is added to liquid water and reacts to produce hydrogen gas and aqueous sodium hydroxide. Balanced chemical equation for this reaction is given below. Na-sodium , H2o- water, H-hydrogen gas and NaOH- aqueous sodium hydroxide. Two atoms of Na react with two atoms of water and this reaction will give us H (hydrogen gas) and two atoms of NaOH (aqueous sodium hydroxide). 2Na + 2 H2o = H2 +2NaOH.

Which of the following observations would indicate that a material is a pure substance?
Ira Lisetskai [31]
The answer to the question is the option C. it cannot be physically broken down into different types of atoms. This means that the material is an element, which is a pure substance. Because an element is a pure substance that is formed by one only type of atoms. For example, gold is an element and all its atoms are of the same type. That is also true for any of the 118 elements of the periodic table. Compounds (other kind of pure substances) can be broken down into molecules (which contain different kind of atoms, but always in the same proportion) and mixtures (non pure substances) have different kind of substances.

What is the daughter nuclide when 0-15 experiences positron emission?
Helen [10]

The daughter isotope (a decay product)of O-15 = N-15(Nitrogen 15)

Further explanation

Radioactivity is the process of unstable isotopes to stable isotopes by decay, by emitting certain particles,

 • alpha α particles ₂He⁴
 • beta β ₋₁e⁰ particles
 • gamma particles γ
 • positron particles ₁e⁰

O-15 emits positron particles ₁e⁰, so the atomic number decreases by 1, the mass number is the same

Reaction

\tt _8^{15}O\Rightarrow _7^{15}N+_1^0e

The mass number of the daughter isotope = 15, atomic number = 7

If we look at the periodic system, the element with atomic number 7 is Nitrogen (N)

Compared to an atom of C-12, an atom of C-14 has
KonstantinChe [14]

Explanation:

Carbon-12 atoms have stable nuclei because of the 1:1 ratio of protons and neutrons.

Carbon-14 atoms have nuclei which are unstable. C-14 atoms will undergo alpha decay and produce atoms of N-14. Carbon-14 dating can be used to determine the age of artifacts which are not more than 50,000 years old.
