One kilogram of water at 100 0C is cooled reversibly to 15 0C. Compute the change in entropy. Specific heat of water is 4190 J/K
mina [271]

Answer:

The change in entropy is -1083.112 joules per kilogram-Kelvin.

Explanation:

If the water is cooled reversibly with no phase changes, then there is no entropy generation during the entire process. By the Second Law of Thermodynamics, we represent the change of entropy (s_{2} - s_{1}), in joules per gram-Kelvin, by the following model:

s_{2} - s_{1} = \int\limits^{T_{2}}_{T_{1}} {\frac{dQ}{T} }

s_{2} - s_{1} = m\cdot c_{w} \cdot \int\limits^{T_{2}}_{T_{1}} {\frac{dT}{T} }

s_{2} - s_{1} = m\cdot c_{w} \cdot \ln \frac{T_{2}}{T_{1}} (1)

Where:

m - Mass, in kilograms.

c_{w} - Specific heat of water, in joules per kilogram-Kelvin.

T_{1}, T_{2} - Initial and final temperatures of water, in Kelvin.

If we know that m = 1\,kg, c_{w} = 4190\,\frac{J}{kg\cdot K}, T_{1} = 373.15\,K and T_{2} = 288.15\,K, then the change in entropy for the entire process is:

s_{2} - s_{1} = (1\,kg) \cdot \left(4190\,\frac{J}{kg\cdot K} \right)\cdot \ln \frac{288.15\,K}{373.15\,K}

s_{2} - s_{1} = -1083.112\,\frac{J}{kg\cdot K}

The change in entropy is -1083.112 joules per kilogram-Kelvin.

What is the product if an atom of Po-209<br> undergoes alpha decay?
g100num [7]
<h3>Answer:</h3>

Lead-205 (Pb-205)

<h3>Explanation:</h3>

<u>We are given;</u>

  • An atom of Po-209

We are supposed to identify its product after an alpha decay;

  • Polonium-209 has a mass number of 209 and an atomic number of 84.
  • When an element undergoes an alpha decay, the mass number decreases by 4 while the atomic number decreases by 2.
  • Therefore, when Po-209 undergoes alpha decay it results to the formation of a product with a mass number of 205 and atomic number of 82.
  • The product from this decay is Pb-205, because Pb-205 has a mass number of 205 and atomic number 82.
  • The equation for the decay is;

²⁰⁹₈₄Po → ²⁰⁵₈₂Pb + ⁴₂He

  • Note; An alpha particle is represented by a helium nucleus, ⁴₂He.

Explain the connection between reactants, products and limiting reactant.
balu736 [363]
In easy words the connection between Reactants, Products and Limiting reactants is as follow,

Reactants and Products:
                                       Reactants are the starting materials for the synthesis of final synthesized materials called as products.

Example:
                 CH₄  +  2 O₂     →      CO₂  +  2 H₂O

In above reaction Methane (CH₄) and Oxygen (O₂) are the reactants while, CO₂ and H₂O are the products.

Reactants, Products and Limiting Reactants:
                                                                       Considering the same example it is seen that for one mole of CO₂ two moles of O₂ are required to completely convert into CO₂ and H₂O. If either of the reactant is taken less than the required amount then it will act as a limiting reactant because it will consume first leaving the second reactant present in excess as compare to it. Hence, we can say that the limiting reactant is the starting material which controls the amount of product being formed.

Identify the element: 6 energy level, metallic, 82 election
Lady bird [3.3K]

<u>Answer</u>:-

Name of element = Lead

Symbol ♾ of Lead = Pb

Atomic no. = 82

Atomic mass = 207.2 amu

No. of protons = 82

No. of electrons = 82

Yes, lead(Pb) is a metallic element and certainly it has 6 electron shells which means 6 energy level.
