Chemistry

Answer:

P = 2.145kPa

Explanation:

Mass = 22.1g

Molar mass of CO2 = 44g/mol

Vol = 165mL = 0.165L

T = -188°C = (-188 + 273.15)K = 85.15K

R = 8.314J/mol.K

From ideal gas equation,

PV = nRT

P = pressure of the ideal gas

V = volume the gas occupies

n = number of moles if the gas

R = ideal gas constant

T = temperature of the gas

n = number of moles

n = mass / molar mass

n = 22.1 / 44 = 0.50moles

PV = nRT

P = nRT/ V

P = (0.5 × 8.314 × 85.15) / 0.165

P = 2145.26Pa = 2.145kPa

Pressure of the gas is 2.145kPa

A chemist prepares a sample of helium gas at a certain pressure, temperature and volume and then removes all but a fourth of the
cupoosta [38]

Answer:

The temperature must be changed to 4 times of the initial temperature so as to keep the pressure and the volume the same.

Explanation:

Pressure in the container is P and volume is V.

Temperature of the helium gas molecules =T_1

Molecules helium gas = x

Moles of helium has = n_1= \frac{x}{N_A}

PV = nRT (Ideal gas equation)

PV=n_1RT_1...[1]

After removal of helium gas only a fourth of the gas molecules remains and pressure in the container and volume should remain same.

Molecules of helium left after removal = \frac{x}{4}

Moles of helium has left after removal = n_2= \frac{x}{4\times N_A}

PV=n_2RT_2...[2]

n_1RT_1=n_2RT_2

\frac{x}{N_A}\times T_1=\frac{x}{4\times N_A}\times T_2

T_1=\frac{T_2}{4}

T_2=4T_1

The temperature must be changed to 4 times of the initial temperature so as to keep the pressure and the volume the same.

The Ostwald process for the commercial production of nitric acid from ammonia and oxygen involves the following steps:
bagirrra123 [75]

Answer:

12 NH_3 (g)+ 21 O_2 (g) + \longrightarrow  14 H_2O (l) + 8 HNO_3 (g) + 4 NO (g)

Explanation:

The steps of the Ostwald process:

4 NH_3 (g) + 5 O_2 (g) \longrightarrow 4 NO (g) + 6 H_2O (g)

2 NO (g) + O_2 (g) \longrightarrow 2 NO_2 (g)

3 NO_2 (g) + H_2O (l) \longrightarrow 2 HNO_3 (g) + NO (g)

Combinning the equations:

4 NH_3 (g) + 5 O_2 (g) \longrightarrow 4 NO (g) + 6 H_2O (g)

+

(2 NO (g) + O_2 (g) \longrightarrow 2 NO_2 (g))*2

+

(3 NO_2 (g) + H_2O (l) \longrightarrow 2 HNO_3 (g) + NO (g))*4/3

=

4 NH_3 (g)+ 4 NO (g)+ 7 O_2 (g) + 4 NO_2 (g) +4/3 H_2O (l) \longrightarrow 4 NO (g) + 6 H_2O (g) +  4 NO_2(g) + 8/3 HNO_3 (g) + 4/3 NO (g)

Simplifying:

4 NH_3 (g)+ 7 O_2 (g) + \longrightarrow  14/3 H_2O (l) + 8/3 HNO_3 (g) + 4/3 NO (g)

12 NH_3 (g)+ 21 O_2 (g) + \longrightarrow  14 H_2O (l) + 8 HNO_3 (g) + 4 NO (g)

The overall reaction is endothermic becuase the formation of new chemical bonds requires energy consumption.
