Atoms of metallic elements tend to...
lara31 [8.8K]

The answer is: lose electrons and form positive ions.

Most metals have strong metallic bond, because of strong electrostatic attractive force between valence electrons (metals usually have low ionization energy and lose electrons easy) and positively charged metal ions.

The ionization energy (Ei) is the minimum amount of energy required to remove the valence electron, when element lose electrons, oxidation number of element grows (oxidation process).

For example, magnesium has atomic number 12, which means it has 12 protons and 12 electrons. It lost two electrons to form magnesium cation (Mg²⁺) with stable electron configuration like closest noble gas neon (Ne) with 10 electrons.

Electron configuration of magnesium ion: ₁₂Mg²⁺ 1s² 2s² 2p⁶.

Explain ionization suppressants as applied to atomic spectrometry
levacccp [35]

An ionization suppressor is an alkali metal capable of preventing ionization, which can be used in atomic spectroscopy to determine matter composition.

What is ionization?

Ionization refers to the phenomena capable of converting neutral atoms/molecules to electrically charged atoms/ions.

Ionization is a process by which radiation (e.g., alpha, beta, gamma rays) can pass energy to inert matter.

Some examples of ionization suppressors include salts of alkali metals (for example, potassium), which can be used in atomic spectroscopy to determine matter composition.

Explain how its electron configuration influences the chemical behavior of an atom.
Llana [10]

More unstable an electron configuration , the more reactive an atom will become.

How electron configuration influences the chemical behavior of an atom?

This is happen generally, If we look at the Group 1 elements in the periodic table, they are all highly reactive as they have 1 electron in their outermost shells - an unstable configuration in terms of energy.

Also, the noble gases in Group 8 in the periodic table are 'inert' that means they don't react (or more correctly, have an incredibly low reactivity). This is because they have 8 electrons in their outermost shell and thus have no need to acquire or lose electrons to possess a stable electron configuration.

Hence, electron configuration influences the chemical behavior of an atom.

A sample of rubidium contains two different isotopes. 72.15% of the sample
Leona [35]

Answer:

Average atomic mass = 85.557 amu.

Explanation:

Given data:

Percent abundance of Rb-85 = 72.15%

Percent abundance of Rb-87 = 27.85%

Average atomic mass = ?

Solution:

Average atomic mass = (abundance of 1st isotope × its atomic mass) +(abundance of 2nd isotope × its atomic mass) / 100

Average atomic mass = (72.15×85)+(27.85×87) /100

Average atomic mass = 6132.75 + 2422.95 / 100

Average atomic mass = 8555.7 / 100

Average atomic mass = 85.557 amu.
