3.7. A dog searching for a bone walks 3.50 m south, then 8.20 m at an angle 23.1 degrees north of east, and finally 15.0 m west.

(a) What is the magnitude of the dog’s total displacement? (b) What is the direction of the dog’s total displacement where directly east is taken as zero degrees and counter-clockwise is positive?

Answer:

Explanation:

We shall represent displacement of dog in vector form , in terms of i , j , i representing east  and  j representing north .

Dog travels 3.5 m south .

Displacement D₁ = - 3.5 j

then dog travels 8.2 m , 23.1 degree north of east

Displacement D₂ = 8.2 cos23.1 i + 8.2 sin23 j

D₂ = 8.2 cos23.1 i + 8.2 sin23.1  j

= 7.54 i + 3.22 j

Third displacement

D₃ = - 15i

Total displacement = D₁ + D₂ + D₃

= - 3.5 j + 7.54 i + 3.22 j  -15i

= - 7.46 i - 0.28 j

Magnitude of displacement = √ ( 7.46² + .28²)

= √(55.65 + .08 )

= 7.46 m

b ) Direction of displacement

If Ф be angle , displacement makes with west direction

TanФ =  .08 / 55.65 = .00143

Ф = .082 degree south of west or almost west .

From east , this angle = 180 + .082 = 180.082 , counterclockwise .

A projectile is launched at an angle of 30° from the horizontal and lands 69 s later at the same height from which it was launch
RideAnS [48]

Answer:

679.2 m/s

Explanation:

The formula for the time of flight of a projectile is given as,

T = 2usinФ/g ......................... Equation 1

Where T = Time of flight, u = initial velocity, Ф = angle of projectile to the horizontal, g = acceleration due to gravity.

make u the subject of the equation

u = Tg/2sinФ....................... Equation 2

Given: T = 69 s, Ф = 30°

Constant: g = 9.8 m/s²

Substitute into equation 2

u = (69×9.8)/(2×sin30)

u = 679.2 m/s.

Hence the initial speed of the projectile is 679.2 m/s

When objects exchange charge, why do we say it's the negative charge that moves and not the positive?
Novay_Z [31]

Answer:

It is said that the negative charge moves because the electrons in the atoms of any object are taken or given to the atoms of another object.

Explanation:

The atom is made up of protons, electrons and neutrons. The number of protons is exactly the same to the number of electrons for a certain element. For example, hydrogen: it has a proton, and therefore, an electron.

The electron has a negative charge. The proton has a positive charge. And the neutron has no charge, so it is neutral. While the atom has the same number of protons and electrons, it will not be electrically charged.

An example of how a charge exchange occurs between two objects is through the case of rubbing. This makes the atoms of the two objects close enough that there is an electron transfer, causing any of the objects to gain or lose electrons as a consequence of each other interaction. In the case of transferring electrons, the atom will have a greater number of protons, so it will be positively charged. When the atom receive electrons, it will have a greater number of electrons, so it will be negatively charged.

Therefore, since it is the electrons that move from one atom to another, then it is the negative charge that moves (<em>characterized by the electrons</em>) and not the positive charge (<em>characterized by the protons</em>).

The kinetic energy of a baseball that with a mass of 0.140kg is 7 J. What is the baseballs velocity?
Nuetrik [128]

Answer:

10 m/s

Explanation:

Kinetic energy= \frac{1}{2}mv² where m is mass and v is velocity.

We have to make v the subject so we should rearrange the equation

K=\frac{1}{2}mv²

v²= \frac{K}{0.5*m} (use algebra)

v²= 7/0.5×0.140

v²=100

v=√100

v=10 m/s

We can confirm this by using the kinetic energy formula.

K=\frac{1}{2}×0.140×10²

K= 7 J

Hence it is proved that velocity is 10 m/s
