Calculate ΔH (in kJ) for the process Hg2Br2(s) → 2 Hg(l) + Br2(l) from the following information.
Ilia_Sergeevich [38]

Answer : The enthalpy change of reaction is 206.9 kJ

Explanation :

According to Hess’s law of constant heat summation, the heat absorbed or evolved in a given chemical equation is the same whether the process occurs in one step or several steps.

According to this law, the chemical equation can be treated as ordinary algebraic expression and can be added or subtracted to yield the required equation. That means the enthalpy change of the overall reaction is the sum of the enthalpy changes of the intermediate reactions.

The given final reaction is,

Hg_2Br_2(s)\rightarrow 2Hg(l)+Br_2(l) \Delta H=?

The intermediate balanced chemical reaction will be,

(1) Hg(l)+Br_2(l)\rightarrow HgBr_2(s) \Delta H^o_1=-170.7kJ

(2) Hg(l)+HgBr_2(s)\rightarrow Hg_2Br_2(s) \Delta H^o_2=-36.2kJ

First we will reverse the reaction 1 and 2 then adding both the equation, we get :

(1) HgBr_2(s)\rightarrow Hg(l)+Br_2(l) \Delta H^o_1=+170.7kJ

(2) Hg_2Br_2(s)\rightarrow Hg(l)+HgBr_2(s) \Delta H^o_2=+36.2kJ

The expression for final enthalpy is,

\Delta H=\Delta H^o_1+\Delta H^o_2

\Delta H=(+170.7kJ)+(+36.2kJ)

\Delta H=206.9kJ

Therefore, the enthalpy change of reaction is 206.9 kJ

Combustion analysis of toluene, a common organic solvent, gives 8.20 mg of co2 and 1.92 mg of h2o. if the compound contains only
cestrela7 [59]
For the purpose of proper representation in this item, we let the number of moles of carbon in the compound be x, that of H is y. The equation of toluene now becomes,
                   CxHy
The combustion reaction is,
        CxHy + O2 --> CO2 + H2O

The equation presented above may not be balanced yet. Then, we determine the number of mmols of C, H, and O in the product using the given masses.

(1) 8.20 mg CO2
             (8.2 mg CO2)(1 mmol CO2/44 mg CO2) = 0.186 mmol CO2
     which means,
                     0.186 mmol C
                     0.373 mmol O

(2) 1.92 mg H2O
            (1.92 mg H2O)(1 mmol H2O/18 mg H2O) = 0.107 mmol H2O
    which means
                    0.2133 mmol H
                    0.107 mmol O

Thus, the equation for toluene is,
               C(0.186)H(0.2133)

Dividing the numbers by the lesser value,
               CH(8/7)
To eliminate the fraction, we multiply by the denominator. Thus, the final answer would be,
              C7H8

Five gases combined in a gas cylinder have the following partial pressures: 3.00 atm (N2), 1.80 atm (O2), 0.29 atm (Ar), 0.18 at
levacccp [35]
In order to solve the total pressure that is exerted by the gases, we need to use the Dalton's Law of Partial pressures. These are the calculations that you need to find out the total amount of pressure exerted to the gases:

3.00atm (N2) + 1.80atm (O2) + 0.29atm (Ar) + 0.18atm (He) + 0.10atm (H),
add up all of that, and the answer would turn out to be: 5.37atm.
