When a 5.0 kg box is hung from a spring, the spring stretches to 50 mm beyond its relaxed length. (a) In an elevator acceleratin

g upward at 2.0 m/s2 , how far does the spring stretch with the same box attached? (b) How fast and in which direction should the elevator accelerate for the spring stretch to be zero (that is, the spring returns to its relaxed length)?

Answer:

a) the spring will stretch 60.19 mm with the same box attached as it accelerates upwards

b) spring will be relaxed when the elevator accelerates downwards at 9.81 m/s²

Explanation:

Given that;

Gravitational acceleration g = 9.81 m/s²

Mass m = 5 kg

Extension of the spring X = 50 mm = 0.05 m

Spring constant k = ?

 we know that;

mg = kX

5 × 9.81 = k(0.05)

k = 981 N/m

a)

Given that; Acceleration of the elevator a = 2 m/s² upwards

Extension of the spring in this situation = X1

Force exerted by the spring = F

we know that;

ma = F - mg

ma = kX1 - mg

we substitute

5 × 2 = 981 × X1 - (5 ×9.81 )

X1 = 0.06019 m

X1 = 60.19 mm

Therefore the spring  will stretch 60.19 mm with the same box attached as it accelerates upwards

B)

Acceleration of the elevator = a

The spring is relaxed i.e, it is not exerting any force on the box.

Only the weight force of the box is exerted on the box.

ma = mg

a = g

a = 9.81 m/s² downwards.

Therefore spring will be relaxed when the elevator accelerates downwards at 9.81 m/s²

An ice-skater with a mass of 80kg is holding a bowling ball with a mass of 8 kg. Suppose that the skater tosses the bowling ball
musickatia [10]

Answer:

0.6 m/s

Explanation:

The details of the masses and velocities are;

The mass of the ice skater, m₁ = 80 kg

The mass of the ball, m₂ = 8 kg

The speed with which the skater tosses the ball forward, v₂ = 6 m/s

Therefore;

According to the principle of conservation of linear momentum, we have;

m₁·v₁ = m₂·v₂

Where;

v₁ = The skater's reactive velocity

Therefore, we get;

80 kg × v₁ = 8 kg × 6 m/s

v₁ = 8 kg × 6 m/s/(80 kg) = 0.6 m/s

The skater's reactive velocity, v₁ = 0.6 m/s.

Sigma F = T-10m but a = 0 in the equation sigma F = ma
julsineya [31]

Answer:

m = T/10 = (1/10) T

Explanation:

From the question given:

∑F = ma .... (1)

∑F = T – 10m .... (2)

a = 0 m/s²

m =?

Thus, we can obtain m in terms of T as shown below:

From equation (1)

∑F = ma

a = 0 m/s²

∑F = ma = m × 0

∑F = 0

Next, substitute the value of ∑F into equation (2) to obtain m. This is illustrated below:

∑F = T – 10m

∑F = 0

0 = T – 10m

Rearrange

0 + 10m = T

10m = T

Divide both side by 10

m = T/10

m = (1/10) T

Therefore, m is (1/10) T
