Atoms for negative or positive ions depending on whether they lose or gain electrons to achieve the stable octet.  If an atom loses electrons then it would have a positive charge (cation) and if the atom gains electrons then it would become negatively charged (anion).

The exchange of electrons in chemical bonding seeks to fulfill the octet rule. There are some exceptions, such as with hydrogen and helium, whose valence shells have a capacity of two electrons.

A 44.0 g sample of an unknown metal at 99.0 oC was placed in a constant-pressure calorimeter of negligible heat capacity contain
tatiyna

Answer:

C_m=0.474\frac{J}{g\°C}

Explanation:

Hello.

In this case, since this is a system in which the water is heated up and the metal is cooled down in a calorimeter which is not affected by the heat lose-gain process, we can infer that the heat lost by the metal is gained be water, it means that we can write:

Q_m=-Q_w

Thus, in terms of masses, specific heats and temperatures we can write:

m_mC_m(T_{eq}-T_m)=-m_wC_w(T_{eq}-T_w)

Whereas the equilibrium temperature is the given final temperature of 28.4 °C and we can compute the specific heat of the metal as shown below:

C_m=\frac{-m_wC_w(T_{eq}-T_w)}{m_m(T_{eq}-T_m)}

Plugging the values in and since the density of water is 1.00 g/mL so the mass is 80.0g, we obtain:

C_m=\frac{-80.0g*4.184\frac{J}{g\°C} (28.4\°C-24.0\°C)}{44.0g(28.4\°C-99.0\°C)}\\\\C_m=0.474\frac{J}{g\°C}

Best regards!

How many ml of 0.5M of HNO3 would be needed to react with 85ml of 0.75M of KOH
olganol [36]

Answer: 127.5ml

Explanation:

To calculate the volume of acid, we use the equation given by neutralization reaction:

n_1M_1V_1=n_2M_2V_2

where,

n_1,M_1\text{ and }V_1 are the n-factor, molarity and volume of acid which is HNO_3

n_2,M_2\text{ and }V_2 are the n-factor, molarity and volume of base which is KOH.

We are given:

n_1=1\\M_1=0.5M\\V_1=?mL\\n_2=1\\M_2=0.75M\\V_2=85mL

Putting values in above equation, we get:

1\times 0.5\times V_1=1\times 0.75\times 85\\\\V_1=127.5mL

Thus 127.5 ml of 0.5M of HNO3 would be needed to react with 85ml of 0.75M of KOH
