A 6 m long, uniform ladder leans against a frictionless wall and makes an angle of 74.3 ◦ with the floor. The ladder has a mass

25.8 kg. A 67.08 kg man climbs 82% of the way to the top of the ladder when it slips and falls to the floor. What is the coefficient of static friction be- tween the ladder and the floor?

Answer: µ=0.205

Explanation:

The horizontal forces acting on the ladder are the friction(f) at the floor and the normal force (Fw) at the wall. For horizontal equilibrium,

f=Fw

The sum of the moments about the base of the ladder Is 0

ΣM = 0 = Fw*L*sin74.3º - (25.8kg*(L/2) + 67.08kg*0.82L)*cos74.3º*9.8m/s²

Note that it doesn't matter WHAT the length of the ladder is -- it cancels.

Solve this for Fw.

0= 0.9637FwL - (67.91L)2.652

Fw=180.1/0.9637

Fw=186.87N

f=186.81N

Since Fw=f

We know Fw, so we know f.

But f = µ*Fn

where Fn is the normal force at the floor --

Fn = (25.8 + 67.08)kg * 9.8m/s² =

910.22N

so

µ = f / Fn

186.81/910.22

µ= 0.205

A burglar attempts to drag a 108 kg metal safe across a polished wood floor Assume that the coefficient of static friction is 0.
V125BC [204]

Answer:

2.00 m/s²

Explanation:

Given

The Mass of the metal safe, M = 108kg

Pushing force applied by the burglar,  F = 534 N

Co-efficient of kinetic friction, \mu_k = 0.3

Now,

The force against the kinetic friction is given as:

f = \mu_k N = u_k Mg

Where,

N = Normal reaction

g= acceleration due to the gravity

Substituting the values in the above equation, we get

f = 0.3\times108\times9.8

or

f = 317.52N

Now, the net force on to the metal safe is

F_{Net}= F-f

Substituting the values in the equation we get

 F_{Net}= 534N-317.52N

or

F_{Net}= 216.48

also,

F_{Net}= M\timesacceleration of the safe

Therefore, the acceleration of the metal safe will be

acceleration of the safe=\frac{F_{Net}}{M}

or

 acceleration of the safe=\frac{216.48}{108}

or

acceleration of the safe=2.00 m/s^2

Hence, the acceleration of the metal safe will be  2.00 m/s²

An 1100kg car reached 30m/s in 9s from rest. What force did the engine provide?
malfutka [58]

Answer:

≅3666.67 N

Explanation:

Use Newton's 2nd law, F = ma where F=force applied, m = mass of the object,

a = acceleration acquired by the object.

a= (v-u)/t where v = final velocity, u = initial velocity and t = time taken

calculate a = (30-0)/9 ≅ 3.33 m/s2

Then F = 1100×a = 3666.67 N
