A plane flies from base camp to lake a, a distance of 290 km at a direction of 20.0° north of east. after dropping off supplies,

the plane flies to lake b, which is 170 km and 30.0° west of north from lake

We can simply find components of the given directions and conveniently add them up to find the total distance.

290 km 20 deg north of east can be decomposed as :

290 x cos(20) EAST + 290 sin(20) NORTH

=272.5 E + 99.18 N

Now from this point ,

170 Km 30 deg west of north :

170 cos(30) N - 170 sin (30) E   [ east = - west]

= 147.22 N - 85 E

hence coordinates of lake b are

(272.5 - 85) E + (99.18 + 147.22)N

187.5 E +264.4 N

use right triangle property to find distance D = \sqrt{a^2 + b^2}

D = 324.13 Km

and angle = atan(b/a) = 54.65 deg

hence lake b is at 324.13 Km 54.65 deg east of north

A reconnaissance plane flies 404 km awayfrom its base at 730 m/s, then flies back to its base at 1095 m/s.What is it’s average s
elena-14-01-66 [18.8K]

The average speed of the plane is 875.999 m/s.

Average speed can be defined as the ratio of total distanced travelled by the object to that of total time taken to cover the distance.

Mathematically, Average speed = Av = \frac{Total Distance}{Total Time}

According to the question,

Speed of the plane away from its base V₁ = 730 m/s

Speed of the plane when it flies back V₂ = 1095 m/s

Plane flies the distance D = 404 km

Total Distance covered by the plane S = 404 * 2 km

(because the distance travelled by the plane when going away from the base and then flying back to the base is same)

Therefore S = 808 km = 808 ˣ 10³ m

Time taken by the plane while flying away from the base T₁ = \frac{D}{V1}

T₁ =  \frac{404000}{730} = 553.425 s

Time taken by the plane while flying back to the base T₂ = \frac{D}{V2}

T₂ =  \frac{404000}{1095} = 368.949s

Total Time T = T₁ + T₂ = 922.375 s

Therefore  Av = \frac{Total Distance}{Total Time}

= \frac{D}{T} m/s

=  \frac{808000}{922.375}  m/s

= 875.999 m/s

The average speed of the plane will be 875.999 m/s.

How does vacuum reduce thermal energy transfer
FrozenT [24]
The silver coating on the inner bottle prevents heat transfer by radiation, and the vacuum between its double wall prevents heat moving by convection. The thinness of the glass walls stops heat entering or leaving the flask by conduction.
