Electron transfer is the term for this process. The resulting anion and cation are attracted by Coulombic forces and an ionic co

mpound is formed. Ionic compounds are neutral: the number of electrons lost in forming the cation(s) must equal the number gained in forming the anion(s). For example, Aluminum (Al, Z = 13, Group 3A or 13) will lose 3 electrons to become Al3+ which is isoelectronic with Neon (Ne), its closest noble gas. To form an ionic compound those 3 electrons must be picked up by a nonmetal. Two possibilities are:
Nitrogen (N, Z = 7, Group 5A or 15) gains all 3 electrons to become isoelectronic with Neon (Z = 10). The compound formed is AlN

3 Chlorine atoms (Cl, Z = 17, Group 7A or 17) each gain 1 electron to become isoelectronic with Argon (Ar, Z = 18). The symbol for the compound formed is AlCl3. The subscript after Cl indicates that 3 Cl- anions are required.

(1 pt) Form an ionic compound with sodium (Na):

Its atomic number is:

How many electrons must it lose to have the same number of electrons as its nearest noble gas?

Write the symbol for the ion:

Which nonmetal atom needs to gain that same number of electrons to have the same number of electrons as its nearest noble gas?

Write the symbol for the compound formed:

(1 pt) Form an ionic compound with calcium (Ca):

Its atomic number is:

How many electrons must it lose to have the same number of electrons as its nearest noble gas?

Write the symbol for the ion:

Which nonmetal atom needs to gain that same number of electrons to have the same number of electrons as its nearest noble gas?

Write the symbol for the compound formed:

The compound formed is NaCl and CaCl_{2}

Explanation:

     PART 1:

  • Atomic number of sodium is 11.
  • Sodium(Na, Z = 11, Group 1A) will lose 1 electron to become Na^{1+} which is isoelectronic to Neon (Ne ,Z = 10).
  • The symbol for the sodium ion is Na^{+}.
  • Chlorine atom (Cl, Z = 17, Group 7A or 17) gains 1 elecron to be isoelectronic to neon.
  • The symbol for the compound formed is NaCl.
  • PART 2:
  • Atomic number of calcium is 20
  • Calcium(Ca, Z = 20 ,Group 2A) will lose two electrons to become Ca^{2+}which is isoelectronic to argon.
  • The symbol for the ion is Ca^{2+}.
  • Two chlorine atoms (Cl, Z = 17, Group 7A or 17) each gains one electron to be isoelectronic to argon(Z = 18)
  • The symbol for the compound formed is CaCl_{2}.

Why is the increasing amount of carbon dioxide being taken up by the oceans a cause for concern?
Anna007 [38]

Answer;

-More carbon dioxide causes an increase in carbonic acid (H2CO3) which leads to a decrease in the concentration of carbonate ion (CO32-).

Explanation;

-Carbon dioxide is added to the atmosphere whenever people burn fossil fuels. Oceans play an important role in keeping the Earth's carbon cycle in balance.

-As the amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere increases, the oceans absorb a lot of it. In the ocean, carbon dioxide reacts with seawater to form carbonic acid which causes the acidity of seawater to increase.

-As long as we keep putting extra carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, the acidity of the ocean will continue to increase. The effect is that; Increasing acidity makes it harder for corals to build skeletons and for shellfish to build the shells they need for protection. Corals are particularly important because they provide homes for many other sea creatures.

Adding water to a concentrated stock solution results in the...?
SOVA2 [1]

Answer:

The solution becomes diluted.

Explanation:

When you add water to a solution, the number of moles of the solvent stays the same while the volume increases. Therefore, the molarity decreases.

Hope this helps!

Hydrogen bromide is found in volcanic gas. What is the chemical formula for
this compound?
ruslelena [56]

Answer:

Hydrogen bromide, anhydrous appears as a colorless gas with a pungent irritating odor. Corrosive. Heavier than air. Prolonged exposure to fire or intense heat may result in the violent rupture and rocketing of the container. Long-term exposure to low concentrations or short-term exposure to high concentrations can result in adverse health effects from inhalation. Used to make other chemicals and as a catalyst in the manufacture of chemicals. Rate of onset: Immediate Persistence: Minutes to hours Odor threshold: 2 ppm Source/use/other hazard: Chemical manufacturing industry; very corrosive.
