A bat can detect small objects such as an insect whose size is approximately equal to the wavelength of the sound the bat makes.

What is the smallest insect a bat can detect? Assume that bats emit a chirp at a frequency of 47.6 kHz, and that the speed of sound in air is 413 m/s. Answer in units of mm.

Given that,

Frequency emitted by the bat, f = 47.6 kHz

The speed off sound in air, v = 413 m/s

We need to find the wavelength detected by the bat. The speed of a wave is given by formula as follows :

v=f\lambda\\\\\lambda=\dfrac{v}{f}\\\\\lambda=\dfrac{413}{47.6\times 10^3}\\\\\lambda=0.00867\ m

or

\lambda=8.67\ mm

So, the bat can detect small objects such as an insect whose size is approximately equal to the wavelength of the sound the bat makes i.e. 8.67 mm.

Periodic waves spread out over the surface of a lake where two women, Jenny and Melissa, are fishing in separate boats 46 meters
Tatiana [17]

Answer:

The wavelength of the water is \lambda = 10.22 m

Explanation:

From the question awe are told that

                The distance between the two boats are 46 m

   Now we are told that a the time the Jenny's boat is at a crest,Melissa's boat is at its lowest point, and there are 4 additional crests between them which can be mathematically represented as

                         Number of wavelength = 4 + 0.5(this accounts for the difference in position crest and lowest point)

                                                              = 4.5

Now the wavelength of the water is \lambda = \frac{Distance }{Number \ of \ division }

                                                                 = \frac{46}{4.5} =10.22m

If the velocity and frequency of a wave are both doubled, how does the wavelength change?
Sindrei [870]

The wavelength will remain unchanged.

Explanation:

The velocity v of a wave in terms of its wavelength \lambda and frequency \nu is

v = \lambda\nu (1)

so if we double both the velocity and the frequency, the equation above becomes

2v = \lambda(2\nu) (2)

Solving for the wavelength from Eqn(2), we get

\lambda = \dfrac{2v}{2\nu} = \dfrac{v}{\nu}

We would have gotten the same result had we used Eqn(1) instead.

. What is the potential energy of a 0.40 kg ball at a height of 9.2 m?
DIA [1.3K]

Explanation:

gravitational potential energy = mgh (must be in S.I. unit)

m= 0.4 kg ; g= 10m/s (gravitational acceleration occurs); h=9.2 m

hence mgh=0.4×10×9.2= 36.8J

unit for energy is joules and since the variables are in S.I. unit, we can use Joules as the final unit for measurement

What do you think is the primary cause of all-weather patterns, sun, humidity, or air pressure? Support your answer.
kap26 [50]

Answer:

Temperature is simply a measure of energy present. The heating and cooling of the atmosphere cause currents as cold air moves towards warmer air.

Explanation:

The most basic thing to understand is that warm air wants to rise while cold air wants to sink. Hot air contains fewer molecules per cubic meter while cold air contains more, hence the warm air will rise up over colder air. The most common example of this is the existence of a hot or cold front. These fronts are simply boundaries between hot and cold air.
