Answer:

The differences are listed below

Explanation:

The differences between consolidation and compaction are as follows:

In compaction the mechanical pressure is used to compress the soil. In consolidation, there is an application of stead pressure.

In compaction, there is a dynamic load by rapid mechanical methods like tamping, rolling, etc. In consolidation, there is static and sustained pressure applied for a long time.

In compaction, the soil volume is reduced by removing air from the void. In consolidation, the soil volume is reduced by squeezing out water from the pores.

Compaction is used for sandy soil, consolidation on the other hand, is used for clay soil.

Answer: Find the explanation below.

Explanation:

Three factors which cause Settlement of Foundation include;

1a. Irregularities in the amount of moisture - Soil can be easily weakened when there is too much moisture.

1b. Incompatible soil types - When the soil texture is not so strong as to withstand pressure from the foundation, settlement of foundation could occur. To tackle this problem, the soil type has to be properly evaluated and the appropriate load-bearing footings should be used.

1c. Improper compaction of fill soils - When fill soils are properly compacted, it can support foundations well. But proper compaction would make them to weaken under the pressure of the foundation.

2. Soil compression is the reduction in the volume of soil which occurs when the soil is under the pressure of a load. It is a common factor in both soil consolidation and compaction.

Soil consolidation occurs when the weight of a building compresses or exerts pressure on a weak soil. Water is removed from the soil in this process.

Soil compaction is the compression of a soil mass as a result of mechanical pressure. The air void is removed from the soil mass.

3. A soil is overconsolidated when an exerting pressure was removed and then applied again.

Normal consolidation occurs when the soil at present is undergoing a very high pressure from a load.

a) A total charge Q = 23.6 μC is deposited uniformly on the surface of a hollow sphere with radius R = 26.1 cm. Use ε0 = 8.85419
dusya [7]

Answer:

(a) E = 0 N/C

(b) E = 0 N/C

(c) E = 7.78 x10^5 N/C

Explanation:

We are given a hollow sphere with following parameters:

Q = total charge on its surface = 23.6 μC = 23.6 x 10^-6 C

R = radius of sphere = 26.1 cm = 0.261 m

Permittivity of free space = ε0 = 8.85419 X 10−12 C²/Nm²

The formula for the electric field intensity is:

E = (1/4πεo)(Q/r²)

where, r = the distance from center of sphere where the intensity is to be found.

(a)

At the center of the sphere r = 0. Also, there is no charge inside the sphere to produce an electric field. Thus the electric field at center is zero.

<u>E = 0 N/C</u>

(b)

Since, the distance R/2 from center lies inside the sphere. Therefore, the intensity at that point will be zero, due to absence of charge inside the sphere (q = 0 C).

<u>E = 0 N/C</u>

(c)

Since, the distance of 52.2 cm is outside the circle. So, now we use the formula to calculate the Electric Field:

E = (1/4πεo)[(23.6 x 10^-6 C)/(0.522m)²]

<u>E = 7.78 x10^5 N/C</u>

A fatigue test was conducted in which the mean stress was 90 MPa (13050 psi), and the stress amplitude was 190 MPa (27560 psi).
Gwar [14]

Answer:

a) 280MPa

b) -100MPa

c) -0.35

d) 380 MPa

Explanation:

GIVEN DATA:

mean stress \sigma_m = 90MPa

stress amplitude \sigma_a = 190MPa

a) \sigma_m =\frac{\sigma_max+\sigma_min}{2}

    90 =\frac{\sigma_{max}+\sigma_{min}}{2} --------------1

\sigma_a =\frac{\sigma_{max}-\sigma_{min}}{2}

   190 = \frac{\sigma_{max}-\sigma_{min}}{2} -----------2

solving 1 and 2 equation we get

\sigma_{max} = 280MPa

b) \sigma_{min} = - 100MPa

c)

stress ratio=\frac{\sigma_{min}}{\sigma_{max}}

=\frac{-100}{280} = -0.35

d)magnitude of stress range

                      =(\sigma_{max} -\sigma_{min})

                       = 280 -(-100) = 380 MPa

technician a says an out-of-round drum can cause a pulsating brake pedal. technician b says an out-of-round drum can cause the b
denis-greek [22]

According to the question of the pulsating brake pedal, both A and B are correct.

What causes brake pulsation?

Brake pulsation is mainly caused by warped rotors/brake discs. Excessive hard braking or quick stops, which can significantly overheat the discs, are the primary causes of deformed rotors. When the discs overheat, the composition of the metal disc material changes, resulting in imperfections in the metal's surface. Hotspots are noticeable irregularities. They appear as discoloured areas of the disc material, which are often bluish or blackish in appearance. The brake pedal is the pedal which you press with your foot to slow or stop a vehicle. When the driver presses the brake pedal, the system automatically delivers the appropriate pressure required to prevent colliding with the vehicle in front.
