A stretched string has a mass per unit length of 4.87 g/cm and a tension of 16.7 N. A sinusoidal wave on this string has an ampl

itude of 0.101 mm and a frequency of 71.0 Hz and is traveling in the negative direction of an x axis. If the wave equation is of the form y(x,t) = y_m sin(kx + ωt), what are (a) y_m, (b) k, and (c) ω, and (d) the correct choice of sign in front of ω?

Answer:

Explanation:

Given that,

Mass per unit length is

μ = 4.87g/cm

μ=4.87g/cm × 1kg/1000g × 100cm/m

μ = 0.487kg/m

Tension

τ = 16.7N

Amplitude

A = 0.101mm

Frequency

f = 71 Hz

The wave is traveling in the negative direction

Given the wave form

y(x,t) = ym• Sin(kx + ωt)

A. Find ym?

ym is the amplitude of the waveform and it is given as

ym = A = 0.101mm

ym = 0.101mm

B. Find k?

k is the wavenumber and it can be determined using

k = 2π / λ

Then, we need to calculate the wavelength λ using

V = fλ

Then, λ = V/f

We have the frequency but we don't have the velocity, then we need to calculate the velocity using

v = √(τ/μ)

v = √(16.7/0.487)

v = 34.29

v = 5.86 m/s

Then, we can know the wavelength

λ = V/f = 5.86 / 71

λ = 0.0825 m

So, we can know the wavenumber

k = 2π/λ

k = 2π / 0.0825

k = 76.18 rad/m

C. Find ω?

This is the angular frequency and it can be determined using

ω = 2πf

ω = 2π × 71

ω = +446.11 rad/s

D. The angular frequency is positive (+) because the direction of propagation of wave is in the negative direction of x

Answer:

Distance-           The length along a path between two points .

Velocity-            The rate and direction at which an object moves .

Displacement-  The net change in position of an object .

Vector-               A measurement that has both magnitude and direction .

Speed-               Measure of the rate at which an object changes position .

Momentum-      The mass of an object multiplied by its velocity.

Explanation:

Vector: A physical quantity having both magnitude and direction is called Vector quantity. Example: Displacement, Velocity, Acceleration, Force etc.

On the other hand , quantity having only magnitude is called Scalar. Example: Distance, Speed, Time, Current etc.

Distance: The totle length of path traversed by a body in certain time is called distance. It is scalar quantity as it has only magnitude. SI unit of distance is meter.

Displacement: It is defined as change in position of a body in given period of time. Actually it is the distance between initial and final position along with given direction. So it is vector quantity. SI unit is meter.

Speed: The rate at which distance is traveled with respect to time is called speed.It is scalar quantity. SI unit is meter/second.

                                    Speed=\frac{Distance}{Time}

Velocity: It can be defined as rate of change in position or displacement with respect to time.It is vector quantity. SI unit is meter/second.

                                    Velocity=\frac{Displacement}{Time}

Momentum: The amount of motion contain in a body is the momentum. It is defined as product of mass and velocity. It is vector quantity. SI unit is kg.meter/second

                                    Momentum=Mass×Velocity

A blow-dryer and a vacuum cleaner each operate with a voltage of 120 V. The current rating of the blow-dryer is 13 A, while that
Feliz [49]

Answer:

(a) 1560 W

(b) 576 W

(c) 1.01

Explanation:

Voltage, V = 120 V

Current in dryer, I = 13 A

current in vacuum cleaner, i' = 4.8 A

(a) Power consumed by dryer,

P = V I = 120 x 13 = 1560 W

(b) Power consumed by vacuum cleaner

P' = V I' = 120 x 4.8 = 576 W

(c) Energy consumed by dryer

E = P x t = 1560 x 15 x 60 = 1404000 J

Energy consumed by the vacuum cleaner

E' = P' x t' = 576 x 40 x 60 = 1382400 J

the ratio of energies is

E : E' = 1404000 : 1382400 = 1.01

Bill and Nageen have each built an electric motor and they are testing them by having them lift boxes. Bill's motor lifts a box
mariarad [96]

Answer:

Bill's motor

Explanation:

Bill's motor lifts a box 0.39 metres in 2 seconds.

Nageen's motor lifts the same box 0.35 metres in 2 seconds.

Power = Work done/time

or

P=\dfrac{mg\times h}{t}

Power of bill's motor,

P_1=\dfrac{m\times 9.8\times 0.39}{2}\\\\P_1=1.91m\ Watts

Power of Nageen's motor,

P_2=\dfrac{m\times 9.8\times 0.35}{2}\\\\P_2=1.71m\ Watts

So, Bill's motor applied more power to the box.
