Achiral compound X has the formula C8H17Br. Y, C8H17Cl, is chiral. X undergoes base-promoted E2 elimination to give a single alk

ene product Z. Under similar conditions Y produces a mixture of alkenes, including Z. Catalytic hydrogenation of Z affords 2-methylheptane. Propose structures for X and Y.

Answer:

1-bromo-6-methylheptane : X

2-chloro-6-methylheptane: Y

Explanation:

A chiral compound is one which has a carbon with all four groups different.

Given:

Compound X is Achiral

Compound Y is chiral

Compound X gives single alkene on elimination : Z

Compound Y gives mixture of alkenes

Z on hydrogenation gives 2-methylheptane.

So the alkene must have carbon chain arrangement similar to 2-methylheptane and so the compound X and Y.

Based on the information the possible compounds are:

1-bromo-6-methylheptane : X

2-chloro-6-methylheptane: Y

The structures are shown in the figure.

How can you tell the difference between a compound and a heterogeneous mixture?
skad [1K]

Answer:

If a substance can be separated into its elements, it is a compound. If a substance is not chemically pure, it is either a heterogeneous mixture or a homogeneous mixture. If its composition is uniform throughout, it is a homogeneous mixture.

Be sure to answer all parts. Industrially, hydrogen gas can be prepared by combining propane gas (c3h8) with steam at about 400°
Helga [31]

Balanced chemical reaction:

C₃H₈(g) + 3H₂O(g) → 3CO(g) + 7H₂(g).

M(C₃H₈) = 44.1 g/mol; molar mass of propane.

M(H₂) = 2 g/mol; molar mass of hydrogen.

From balanced chemical reaction: n(C₃H₈) : n(H₂) = 1 : 7.

7m(C₃H₈) : M(C₃H₈) = m(H₂) : M(H₂).

7·8310 kg : 44.1 g/mol = m(H₂) : 2 g/mol.

m(H₂) = 2638.09 kg; mass of hydrogen.
