What negative impact did chemistry have on society through the production and use of chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs)?

Chemistry

Chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) are used generally in aerosols, sprays, perfume, refrigerants, insulation foams and other stuffs. Throughout its applications, the negative impacts weighed more than its benefits. Its greater setback is the contribution to the thinning of the ozone layer which exposes us more with the harmful ultraviolet rays from the sun.

Catalyst
Hoochie [10]

a. volume of NO : 41.785 L

b. mass of H2O : 18 g

c. volume of O2 : 9.52 L

<h3>Further explanation</h3>

Given

Reaction

4 NH₃ (g) + 5 O2 (g) → 4 NO (g) + 6 H2O (l)

Required

a. volume of NO

b. mass of H2O

c. volume of O2

Solution

Assume reactants at STP(0 C, 1 atm)

Products at 1000 C (1273 K)and 1 atm

a. mol ratio NO : O2 from equation : 4 : 5, so mo NO :

\tt \dfrac{4}{5}\times 0.5=0.4

volume NO at 1273 K and 1 atm

\tt V=\dfrac{nRT}{P}=\dfrac{0.4\times 0.08206\times 1273}{1}=41.785~L

b. 15 L NH3 at STP ( 1mol = 22.4 L)

\tt \dfrac{15}{22.4}=0.67~mol

mol ratio NH3 : H2O from equation : 4 : 6, so mol H2O :

\tt \dfrac{6}{4}\times 0.67=1

mass H2O(MW = 18 g/mol) :

\tt mass=mol\times MW=1\times 18=18~g

c. mol NO at 1273 K and 1 atm :

\tt n=\dfrac{PV}{RT}=\dfrac{1\times 35.5}{0.08206\times 1273}=0.34

mol ratio of NO : O2 = 4 : 5, so mol O2 :

\tt \dfrac{5}{4}\times 0.34=0.425

Volume O2 at STP :

\tt 0.425\times 22.4=9.52~L

22.4 L is the volume of any gas regardless of atmospheric conditions.<br><br> O True<br><br> O False
Contact [7]
This is false. One mole of a gas occupies 22.4 L at STP, which is taken to be 0°C (273 K) and 1 atm. If atmospheric conditions depart from these values, this assumption cannot be used.

Determine the value of the equilibrium constant, Kgoal, for the reaction C(s)+12O2(g)+H2(g)⇌12CH3OH(g)+12CO(g), Kgoal=? by makin
Licemer1 [7]

Answer:

1.71x10²⁷

Explanation:

If we sum 1/2 of (3) + 1/2 of (1):

1/2 (3.) C(s) + 1/2O₂(g) ⇌ CO(g), K₃ = √2.10×10⁴⁷  = 4.58x10²³

1/2 (1)   1/2CO₂(g) + 3/2H₂(g) ⇌ 1/2CH₃OH(g) + 1/2H₂O(g), K₁ = √1.40×10² = 11.8

C(s) + 1/2O₂(g) +<u> 1/2CO₂(g) </u>+<u> 3/2H₂(g</u>) ⇌ 1/2CH₃OH(g) + <u>1/2H₂O(g)</u> + <u>CO(g)</u>

K' = 4.58x10²³ * 11.8 = 5.42x10²⁴

+1/2 (2):

<u>1/2 CO(g)</u> +<u> 1/2H₂O(g)</u> ⇌<u> 1/2CO₂(g)</u> + <u>1/2H₂</u> (g), K = √1.00×10⁵ = 316.2

C(s) + 1/2O₂(g) + H₂(g) ⇌ 1/2 CHO₃H(g) + 1/2CO(g)

K'' = 5.42x10²⁴* 316.2 =

<h3>1.71x10²⁷</h3>
