Two tugboats pull a disabled supertanker. Each tug exerts a constant force of 1.80×106 N , one at an angle 14.0 ∘ west of north,

and the other at an angle 14.0 ∘ east of north, as they pull the tanker a distance 0.800 km toward the north. Part A What is the total work done by the two tugboats on the supertanker?

Answer:

W = 1,049 10⁹ J

Explanation:

Work is defined by the relation

         W = F. d = F d cos θ

where tea is the angle between the forces and the displacement.

The total work is the sum of the work of each tug.

Tug 1

       W₁ = F d cos θ₁

the angle measured from the positive side of the x-axis is

       θ₁ = 14 + 90 = 104º

tugboat 2

             W₂ = F d cos θ₂

             θ₂ = 14

we substitute

             W = F d cos θ₁ + F d cos θ₂

             W = F d (cos θ₁ + cos θ₂)

let's calculate

             W = 1.80 10⁶  800 (cos 104 + cos 14)

             W = 1,049 10⁹ J

Bill and amy want to ride their bikes to school which is 14.4 kilometers away. It takes Amy 49 minutes to get to school and bill
Drupady [299]

3.4m/s

Explanation:

Given parameters:

Distance to school  = 14.4km

Time taken by Amy = 49min

Time taken by bill = 20min after Amy = 20+49 = 69min

Unknown parameters:

How much faster is Amy's average speed = ?

Solution:

Average speed is the rate of change of total distance with total time taken.

 Average speed = \frac{total distance }{total time taken}

convert units to meters and seconds

      1000m = 1km

       60s = 1min

Distance to school  = 14.4 x 1000 = 14400m

Time taken by Amy = 49 x 60 = 2940s

Time taken by Bill = 69 x 60 = 4140s

Average speed of Amy = \frac{14400}{2940}  = 4.9m/s

Average speed of Bill = \frac{4140}{2940}  = 1.4m/s

Differences in speed = 4.9 - 1.5 = 3.4m/s

Amy was 3.4m/s faster than Bill

A box is initially sliding across a frictionless floor toward a spring which is attached to a wall. the box hits the end of the
Serjik [45]
The elastic potential energy of a spring is given by
U= \frac{1}{2}kx^2
where k is the spring's constant and x is the displacement with respect to the relaxed position of the spring.

The work done by the spring is the negative of the potential energy difference between the final and initial condition of the spring:
W=-\Delta U =  \frac{1}{2}kx_i^2 -  \frac{1}{2}kx_f^2

In our problem, initially the spring is uncompressed, so x_i=0. Therefore, the work done by the spring when it is compressed until x_f is
W=- \frac{1}{2}kx_f^2
And this value is actually negative, because the box is responsible for the spring's compression, so the work is done by the box.

Which is not one of the forms that energy can take?
sladkih [1.3K]
Question 1: Newtonian. It refers to work of Newton. Light, electrical and chemical energies are different forms of energy.
Question 2: Nuclear power plants. Heat , Sunlight and energy in atoms are not nuclear energies.
Question 3: Batteries. the other two are examples of mechanical energy. But batteries are examples for chemical energy.
