Water, H2O, is made up of different elements, hydrogen and oxygen. Is this type of combination a mixture or a pure substance? A)

Because water is composed of two separate elements, it is a mixture. B) Because water can be heated and fairly easily turned to steam, it is a mixture. C) Because water is composed of elements found in the periodic table, it is a pure substance. D) Because water molecules all have a consistent ratio of hydrogen to oxygen, it is a pure substance. E

A pure substance is a substance with a consistent ration of the elements that make it up. This means that there is no way to tell one water molecule apart from the other. The atoms in a pure compound contain atoms bonded in the same way throughout the compound.

On the other hand, a mixture  has constituents that have different pure substances mixed together. The constituents of a mixture are easy to distinguish from each other.

With these definitions in mind, we can easily see that water is a pure sustenance because water molecules all have a consistent ratio of hydrogen to oxygen atoms.

The correct answer for this question is D)Because water molecules all have a consistent ratio of hydrogen to oxygen, it is a pure substance.

1. The statement about Newton's reflecting telescope contains 1 error. Find the error, write it, and
Jlenok [28]

Answer:

i. The error is the rough convex mirror.

ii. This should be replaced with a smooth convex morror.

Explanation:

Reflection is dependent on the surface involved and has two types; diffuse and specular. When the surface is rough, diffused reflection is observed. The surface causes a distortion of the incident light (the rays would be reflected at different angles to one another) after reflection. This makes some rays to interfere with one another. While specular reflection is observed with a smooth surface.

In the statement, the rough convex mirror would produce a distorted reflection which would produce diffused reflection. The effect is that few or no rays (depending on the degree of how rough the surfce is) would be reflected to the other smooth, flat diagonal mirror.

As a projectile falls, what happens to the components of velocity?
netineya [11]

Answer:

Option (c).

Explanation:

An object when when projected at an angle, will have some horizontal velocity and vertical velocity such that,

v_x=v\cos\theta\ \text{and}\ v_y=v\sin\theta

\theta is the angle of projection

The horizontal component of the projectile remains the same because there is no horizontal motion. Vertical component changes at every point.

As a projectile falls, vertical velocity increases in magnitude, horizontal velocity stays the same .
