An alpha particle has a charge of +2e and a mass of 6.64 x 10-27 kg. It is accelerated from rest through a potential difference

of 1.2 x 106 V and then enters a uniform magnetic field whose strength is 2.2 T. The alpha particle moves perpendicular to the field. Calculate (a) the speed of the alpha particle, (b) the magnitude of the magnetic force exerted on it, and (c) the radius of its circular path.

Answer:

a) v = 1.075*10^7 m/s

b) FB = 7.57*10^-12 N

c) r = 10.1 cm

Explanation:

(a) To find the speed of the alpha particle you use the following formula for the kinetic energy:

K=qV          (1)

q: charge of the particle = 2e = 2(1.6*10^-19 C) = 3.2*10^-19 C

V: potential difference = 1.2*10^6 V

You replace the values of the parameters in the equation (1):

K=(3.2*10^{-19}C)(1.2*10^6V)=3.84*10^{-13}J

The kinetic energy of the particle is also:

K=\frac{1}{2}mv^2       (2)

m: mass of the particle = 6.64*10^⁻27 kg

You solve the last equation for v:

v=\sqrt{\frac{2K}{m}}=\sqrt{\frac{2(3.84*10^{-13}J)}{6.64*10^{-27}kg}}\\\\v=1.075*10^7\frac{m}{s}

the sped of the alpha particle is 1.075*10^6 m/s

b) The magnetic force on the particle is given by:

|F_B|=qvBsin(\theta)

B: magnitude of the magnetic field = 2.2 T

The direction of the motion of the particle is perpendicular to the direction of the magnetic field. Then sinθ = 1

|F_B|=(3.2*10^{-19}C)(1.075*10^6m/s)(2.2T)=7.57*10^{-12}N

the force exerted by the magnetic field on the particle is 7.57*10^-12 N

c) The particle describes a circumference with a radius given by:

r=\frac{mv}{qB}=\frac{(6.64*10^{-27}kg)(1.075*10^7m/s)}{(3.2*10^{-19}C)(2.2T)}\\\\r=0.101m=10.1cm

the radius of the trajectory of the electron is 10.1 cm

A subway train is traveling at 22.2 m/s when it approaches a slower train 50m ahead traveling in the same direction at 6.94 m/s.
Amiraneli [1.4K]

Answer:

Time that they collide = 4.99s

Relative speed of the trains when they collide: The relative speed of The first train relative to the second, slower train at collision = 4.781 m/s

Explanation:

We will use the equations of motion to obtain the solution required

At time t = 0

speed of first train = 22.2 m/s

Initial space between the two trains = 50 m

Speed of second train = 6.94 m/s

For the first car, distance covered by the first train = y

y = distance covered between the beginning of the deceleration and the point where the the two trains hit one another.

u = initial velocity = 22.2 m/s

t = time taken for all this to happen

a = deceleration = - 2.1 m/s²

y = ut + (1/2)at²

y = 22.2t - 1.05t² (eqn 1)

For the second train,

At t = 0, y = 50 m

Let the new distance moved by the second train before collision = (y - 50)

u = initial velocity = 6.94 m/s

t = time taken = t

a = acceleration of the second train = 0 m/s² (constant velocity)

(y - 50) = ut + (1/2)at²

y - 50 = 6.94t

y = 6.94t + 50 (eqn 2)

substituting for y in eqn 2 using the expression obtained in eqn 1

y = 22.2t - 1.05t²

y = 6.94t + 50

22.2t - 1.05t² = 6.94t + 50

1.05t² - 15.26t + 50 = 0

Solving this quadratic equation

t = 4.99 s or 9.54 s

The position of the two trains are the same at those two times, but the first time is when they hit each other.

t = 4.99 s

At 4.99 s, the the velocity of the first train

v = u + at

v = 22.2 + (-2.1×4.99) = 11.721 m/s in the same direction as the second train.

Relative velocity at this point will be

= 11.721 - 6.94 = 4.781 m/s

Relative speed of the trains when they collide: The relative speed of The first train relative to the second, slower train at collision = 4.781 m/s

Hope this Helps!!!

An injured monkey sits perched on a tree branch 9 m above the ground, while a wildlife veterinarian is kneeling down in the bush
Yakvenalex [24]

Answer:

The hunter should aim directly at the perched monkey because the tranquilizer dart will fall away from the line sight at the same rate that the monkey falls from its perch.

Tan theta = 9 / 90 = .1      so theta = 5.71 deg

The time for the monkey to reach the ground is

t = (2 h / g)^1/2 = (18 / 9.8)^1/2 = 1.36 sec

So the horizontal speed of the dart must be at least

Vx = 90 m / 1.36 sec = 66.4 m/s

Vx = V cos theta

V = 66.4 m/s / cos 5.71 = 66.7 m/s

An object traveling at a constant speed but with a changing direction is accelerating.
prohojiy [21]

Strange as it may seem, that's true. (choice 'a'.)

"Acceleration" doesn't mean "speeding up".  It means ANY change in
the speed or direction of motion.  So a car with the brakes applied
and slowing down, and a point on the rim of a bicycle wheel that's
turning at a constant rate, are both accelerating.
