Deep-sea divers often breathe a mixture of helium and oxygen to avoid getting the "bends" from breathing high-pressure nitrogen.

The helium has the side effect of making the divers' voices sound odd. Although your vocal tract can be roughly described as an open-closed tube, the way you hold your mouth and position your lips greatly affects the standing-wave frequencies of the vocal tract. This is what allows different vowels to sound different. The "ee" sound is made by shaping your vocal tract to have standing-wave frequencies at, normally, 270 Hz and 2300 Hz.What will these frequencies be for a helium-oxygen mixture in which the speed of sound at body temperature is 750 m/s? The speed of sound in air at body temperature is 350 m/s.

Answer:

0.69444 m, 0.08152 m, 0.32407 m, 0.03804 m

Explanation:

v = Velocity of sound

f = Frequency

Length of vocal tract is given by

L=\dfrac{v}{4f}

At f = 270 Hz v = 750 m/s

L=\dfrac{750}{4\times 270}\\\Rightarrow L=0.69444\ m

At f = 2300 Hz v = 750 m/s

L=\dfrac{750}{4\times 2300}\\\Rightarrow L=0.08152\ m

At f = 270 Hz v = 350 m/s

L=\dfrac{350}{4\times 270}\\\Rightarrow L=0.32407\ m

At f = 2300 Hz v = 350 m/s

L=\dfrac{350}{4\times 2300}\\\Rightarrow L=0.03804\ m

You sit "at rest" in front of your computer to answer this question. But you sit on the surface of a planet that spins, so even
igomit [66]

Answer: Linear speed is 1,670 Kph.

Explanation:

If we assume that the earth is a perfect sphere, and that is spinning itself once every roughly 24 hr, we can get the angular velocity of the Earth, in magnitude, as follows:

ω = 2π / 24 Hr

Now, by definition, an angle is the relationship between the arc s, and the radius r, so we can replace these values in the angular velocity expression, as follows:

ω = (Δs / r) . 1/Δt ⇒ ω = (Δs/Δt). 1/r

But, by definition, Δs/At, is just the linear velocity, v, so we can conclude the following;

ω = v/r ⇒ v = ω. r

So, we can get v, as follows:

v = 2π /24 hr . 6378 Km = 1,670 Km/hr.

Suppose astronomers discover a radio message from a civilization whose planet orbits a star 35 light-years away. Their message e
Grace [21]

Answer:

The duration  is  T  =72 \  years /tex]Explanation:From the question we are told that     The  distance is  [tex]D  =  35 \ light-years = 35 *  9.46 *10^{15} = 3.311 *10^{17} \  m

  Generally the time it would take for the message to get the the other civilization is mathematically represented as

         t =  \frac{D}{c}

Here c  is the speed of light with the value  c =  3.08 *10^{8} \  m/s

=>     t =  \frac{3.311 *10^{17} }{3.08 *10^{8}}

=>     t =  1.075 *10^9 \ s

converting to years

           t =  1.075 *10^9 *  3.17 *10^{-8}

              t =  1.075 *10^9 *  3.17 *10^{-8}

            t =  34 \ years

Now the total time taken is mathematically represented as

      T  =  2*  t  +  2 + 2

=>   T  =  2* 34  +  2 + 2

=>   [tex]T  =72 \  years /tex]

you decide to work part time at a local supermarket. The job pays eight dollars and 60 per hour and you work 20 hours per week.
aleksley [76]

Answer:

I guess that we want to find how much money you get each week.

We know that the job pays $8.60 per hour.

We know that you work 20 hours per week.

Then the gross pay (the total money that you earn) in a week is 20 times $8.60, or:

20*$8.60 = $172.

Now we know that your employer witholds:

10% + 7.65% + 5% = 22.65%

Then your employer withholds 22.65% of your gross pay.

if the 100% of your gross pay is $172

Then the 22.65% will be:

(22.65%/100%)*$172 = 0.2265*$172 = $38.96

This means that your employer withholds $38.96 of your weekly gross pay.

Then each week you get:

$172 - $38.96 = $133.04
