In a photoelectric experiment using a sodium surface, you find a stopping potential of 1.61 V for a wavelength of 320 nm and a s

topping potential of 0.740 V for a wavelength of 412 nm. From these data find (a) a value for the Planck constant, (b) the work function Φ for sodium, and (c) the cutoff wavelength λ0 for sodium.

Answer:

a) 4.15×10∧-15 eV/s

b) 1.31 eV

c) 950.4 nm

Explanation:

let Ф be the work function.

a) f = c/λ = (3×10^8)/(320×10^-9) = 9.375×10^14 /s

  f = c/λ = (3×10^8)/(412×10^-9) = 7.28×10^14 /s

E = hf +Ф

Energy which relates to the poteial is calculated in eV (electonvolts).

so E = eV

Now using the straight line analogy in the equation above h is the gradient of the line.

Note that energy which relates to the poteial is calculated in eV (electonvolts).

so E = eV

and h = eV/f

h=[(0.74 - 1.61)eV]/[((7.28 - 9.375)×10^14 )/s]

 = 4.15×10^-15 eV/s ≈ 6.65×10^-34 J/s

b)  E = hf +Ф

  eV = hc/λ - Ф

Ф = hc/λ -  eV

   = (4.15×10^-15 eV/s)(3×10^8)/[(320×10^-9) -  (1.60×10^-19)(1.61)eV]

   = 1.31 eV ≈ 2.1×10^-19 J/s

c) Ф = hc/λ0

  λ0 = hc/Ф

       = [(6.65×10^-34 J/s)(3×10^8 )]/ (2.1×10^-19 J/s)

       = 9.50×10^-7 m

Starting from Newton’s law of universal gravitation, show how to find the speed of the moon in its orbit from the earth-moon dis
WARRIOR [948]

Answer: 1010.92 m/s

Explanation:

According to Newton's law of universal gravitation:

F=G\frac{Mm}{r^{2}} (1)

Where:

F is the gravitational force between Earth and Moon

G=6.674(10)^{-11}\frac{m^{3}}{kgs^{2}} is the Gravitational Constant

M=5.972(10)^{24} kg is the mass of the Earth

m=7.349(10)^{22} kg is the mass of the Moon

r=3.9(10)^{8} m is the distance between the Earth and Moon

Asuming the orbit of the Moon around the Earth is a circular orbit, the Earth exerts a centripetal force on the moon, which is equal to F:

F=m.a_{C} (2)

Where a_{C} is the centripetal acceleration given by:

a_{C}=\frac{V^{2}}{r} (3)

Being V the orbital velocity of the moon

Making (1)=(2):

m.a_{C}=G\frac{Mm}{r^{2}} (4)

Simplifying:

a_{C}=G\frac{M}{r^{2}} (5)

Making (5)=(3):

\frac{V^{2}}{r}=G\frac{M}{r^{2}} (6)

Finding V:

V=\sqrt{\frac{GM}{r}} (7)

V=\sqrt{\frac{(6.674(10)^{-11}\frac{m^{3}}{kgs^{2}})(5.972(10)^{24} kg)}{3.9(10)^{8} m}} (8)

Finally:

V=1010.92 m/s

What is the name given to the initial 150 counts in 2 minutes?
Whitepunk [10]

Divide CFU of Dilution. Divide the CFU of the dilution (the number of colonies you counted) by the result from step 4. For this example, you work out 46 ÷ 1/1000, which is the same as 46 x 1,000. The result is 46,000 CFU in the original sample.

Find the mass of a sample of water if its temperature dropped 24.8 °C when it lost 870 J of
rosijanka [135]

Answer:

8.35 × 10^{-3} kg

Explanation:

Remember the formula for heat:

Q=mc\Delta T

You just need to solve for m, doing so you're left with:

m=\dfrac{Q}{c\Delta T}

Replace the variables with numbers and that's it.
