2.5 kg of air at 150 kPa and 12°C is contained in a gas-tight, frictionless piston-cylinder device. The air is now compressed to

a final pressure of 600 kPa. During the process, heat is transferred from the air such that the temperature inside the cylinder remains constant. Calculate the work input during this process.

Answer:

Work input =283.47 KJ

Explanation:

Given that

P_1=150\ KPa

P_2=600\ KPa

T=12°C=285 K

m= 2.5 kg

Given that this is the constant temperature process.

e know that work for isothermal process

W=P_1V_1\ln \dfrac{P_1}{P_2}

W=mRT\ln \dfrac{P_1}{P_2}

So now putting the values

W=mRT\ln \dfrac{P_1}{P_2}

W=2.5\times 0.287\times 285\ln \dfrac{150}{600}

W=-283.47 KJ

Negative sign indicates that work is done on the system.

So work input =283.47 KJ

Juli2301 [7.4K]

Answer:

a) 1 m^3/Kg

b) 504 kJ

c) 514 kJ

Explanation:

<u>Given  </u>

-The mass of C_o2 = 1 kg

-The volume of the tank V_tank = 1 m^3

-The added energy E = 14 W

-The time of adding energy t = 10 s

-The increase in specific internal energy Δu = +10 kJ/kg

-The change in kinetic energy ΔKE = 0 and The change in potential energy

ΔPE =0

<u>Required  </u>

(a)Specific volume at the final state v_2

(b)The energy transferred by the work W in kJ.

(c)The energy transferred by the heat transfer W in kJ and the direction of

the heat transfer.

Assumption

-Quasi-equilibrium process.

<u>Solution</u>

(a) The volume and the mass doesn't change then, the specific volume is constant.

 v= V_tank/m ---> 1/1= 1 m^3/Kg

(b) The added work is defined by.

W =E * t --->  14 x 10 x 3600 x 10^-3 = 504 kJ

(c) From the first law of thermodynamics.

Q - W = m * Δu

Q = (m * Δu) + W--> (1 x 10) + 504 = 514 kJ

The heat have (+) sign the n it is added to the system.

Define extensive and intensive properties of thermodynamic system.
Flura [38]

Answer:

An intense property is a physical attribute of a system that is independent of the size of the system or the quantity of material it contains. An extensive property of a system, on the other hand, is dependent on the size of the system or the amount of material in it.

Air with a mass flow rate of 2.3 kg/s enters a horizontal nozzle operating at steady state at 450 K, 350 kPa, and velocity of 3
viktelen [127]

Answer:

Given that

Mass flow rate ,m=2.3 kg/s

T₁=450 K

P₁=350 KPa

C₁=3 m/s

T₂=300 K

C₂=460 m/s

Cp=1.011 KJ/kg.k

For ideal gas

P V = m R T

P = ρ RT

\rho_1=\dfrac{P_1}{RT_1}

\rho_1=\dfrac{350}{0.287\times 450}

ρ₁=2.71 kg/m³

mass flow rate

m= ρ₁A₁C₁

2.3 = 2.71 x A₁ x 3

A₁=0.28 m²

Now from first law for open system

h_1+\dfrac{C_1^2}{200}+Q=h_2+\dfrac{C_2^2}{2000}

For ideal gas

Δh = CpΔT

by putting the values

1.011\times 450+\dfrac{3^2}{200}+Q=1.011\times 300+\dfrac{460^2}{2000}

Q=1.011\times 300+\dfrac{460^2}{2000}-\dfrac{3^2}{200}-1.011\times 450

Q= - 45.49 KJ/kg

Q =- m x 45.49 KW

Q= - 104.67 KW

Negative sign indicates that heat transfer from air to surrounding
