Two physical pendulums (not simple pendulums) are made from meter sticks that are suspended from the ceiling at one end. The sti

cks are uniform and are identical in all respects, except that one is made of wood (mass = 0.16 kg) and the other of metal (mass = 0.88 kg). They are set into oscillation and execute simple harmonic motion. Determine the period of (a) the wood pendulum and (b) the metal pendulum.
(A) T = ? s
(B) T = ? s

Answer: A and B is 1.64 seconds.

The period is the same for the wood and metal pendulums because the mass has been eliminated mathematically in the expression for T.

Explanation: The period T is given by

T = 2π/ω, where ω is the angular frequency.

ω, angular frequency, is represented by

Sqaureroot of (m*g*L/I), where m is mass, L is the distance from pivot to the center of mass and I is the moment of inertia about the pivot .

Therefore

T = 2π/ sqaureroot(m*g*L/I),

Further expressed as

T = 2π*sqaureroot(I/m*g*L),

Inertia Is given by

I=1/3mL^2 where L=length of the stick. Since the meter stick is uniform, the distance L from one end to the center of mass is Upper L = one-half Upper L 0 period.

Thus the period of oscillation is expressed as;

T=2π*sqrt(I/mg(1/2L)

=2π*sqrt(1/3m*L^2/mg(1/2L)

= 2π*sqrt(2L/3g)

=2π*sqrt(2*1/3*9.8)

= 1.64 seconds

Suzy drops a rock from the roof of her house. Mary sees the rock pass her 2.9 m tall window in 0.134 sec. From how high above th
timama [110]

Answer:

Explanation:

Given

length of window h=2.9\ m

time Frame for which rock can be seen is \Delta t=0.134\ s

Suppose h is height above which rock is dropped

Time taken to cover h+2.9 is t_1

so using equation of motion

y=ut+\frac{1}{2}at^2

where y=displacement

u=initial velocity

a=acceleration

t=time

time taken to travel h is

h=0+0.5\times g\times (t_2)^2---2

Subtract 1 and 2 we get

2.9=0.5g(t_1^2-t_2^2)

5.8=g(t_1+t_2)(t_1-t_2))

and from equation t_1-t_2=0.134\ s

so t_1+t_2=\frac{5.8}{9.8\times 0.134}

t_1+t_2=4.416\ s

and t_1=t_2+\Delta t

so t_2+\Delta t+t_2=4.416

2t_2+0.134=4.416

t_2=0.5\times 4.282

t_2=2.141\ s

substitute the value of t_2 in equation 2

h=0.5\times 9.8\times (2.141)^2

h=22.46\ m

Is a magnetic reversal a threat to life on Earth ? Whay do you say?
KATRIN_1 [288]
I would say yes, a magnetic reversal a threat to life on Earth. Base on articles, it is the end of the world if that happens. Some people believe global cataclysm will occur when Earth's magnetic poles reverse. When north goes south, they say, the continents will lurch in one direction or the other, triggering massive earthquakes, rapid climate change and species extinctions.
