The flow of current is only possible when the circuit is closed. In other words the current will flow only when it is continuous. If this circuit is non continuous or broken at any point, the current flow will stop. This kind of circuit is known as open circuit.

Switches are used to control the flow of current in circuit. When switch is closed current flows and when its open, current doesn't flow.
