A gas mixture contains 10.0 mole% H2O (v) and 90.0 mole % N2. The gas temperature and absolute pressure at the start of each of

the three parts of this problem are 50°C and 500 mmHg. Ideal gas behavior may be assumed in every part of this problem.
Determine:
a. If some of the gas mixture is put in a cylinder and slowly cooled at constant pressure, at what temperature would the first drop of liquid form?
b. If a 30.0-liter flask is filled with some of the gas mixture and sealed and the water vapor in the flask is completely condensed, what volume (cm^3) would be occupied by the liquid water?
c. If the gas mixture is stored in a rigid-walled cylinder and a low-pressure weather front moves in and the barometric (atmospheric) pressure drops, which of the following would change: (i) the gas density, (ii) the absolute pressure of the gas, (iii) the partial pressure of water in the gas, (iv) the gauge pressure of the gas, (v) the mole fraction of water in the gas, (vi) the dew-point temperature of the mixture?

Answer: (a). T = 38.2 °C     (b). V = 1.3392 cm³     (c). ii and iii

Explanation:

this is quite easy to solve, i will give a step by step analysis to solving this problem.

(a). from the question we have that;

the Mole fraction of Nitrogen, yи₂ = 0.1

Also the Mole fraction of Water, yн₂o = 0.1

We know that the vapor pressure is equal to the partial pressure because the vapor tends to condense at due point.

ρн₂o = ṗн₂o

      = yн₂oP = 0.1 × 500 mmHg = 50 mmHg

from using Antoine equation, we apply the equation

logρн₂o = A - B/C+T

T = B/(A - logρн₂o) - C

  = 1730.63 / (8.07131 - log 50mmHg) - 223.426

T = 38.2 °C

We have that the temperature for the first drop of liquid form is 38.2 °C

(b). We have to calculate the total moles of gas mixture in a 30 litre flask;

   n  = PV/RT

   n = [500(mmHG) × 30L] / [62.36(mmHGL/mol K) × 323.15K] = 0.744 mol

Moles of H₂O(v) is 0.1(0.744) = 0.0744 mol

Moles of N₂ is 0.9(0.744) = 0.6696 mol

we have that the moles of water condensed is 0.0744 mol i.e the water vapor  in the flask is condensed

Vн₂o = 0.0744 × 18 / 1 (g/cm³)

Vн₂o = 1.3392 cm³

Therefore, the  volume of the liquid water is 1.3392 cm³

(3). (ii) and (iii)

The absolute pressure of the gas and The partial pressure of water in the gas would change if the barometric pressure drops.

What causes valley air to move up surrounding mountains during the day?
AleksandrR [38]

Answer:

so the third one

Explanation:

During the day, the sun heats up mountain air rapidly while the valley remains relatively cooler. Convection causes it to rise, causing a valley breeze. At night, the process is reversed. During the night the slopes get cooled and the dense air descends into the valley as the mountain wind.

When the temperature of a gas changes, it's volume decreases from 12 cm3 to 7 cm3 if the final temperature is measured to be 18°
ElenaW [278]

Answer:

The initial temperature is 499 K

Explanation:

Step 1: Data given

initial volume = 12 cm3 = 12 mL

Final volume = 7 cm3 = 7mL

The final temperature = 18 °C = 291 K

Step 2: Calculate the initial temperature

V1/T1 = V2/T2

⇒with V1 = the initial volume = 0.012 L

⇒with T1 = the initial volume = ?

⇒with V2 = the final volume 0.007 L

⇒with T2 = The final temperature = 291 K

0.012 / T1 = 0.007 / 291

0.012/T1 = 2.4055*10^-5

T1 = 0.012/2.4055*10^-5

T1 = 499 K

The initial temperature is 499 K

If a 28.0 L balloon with a temperature of
Alexeev081 [22]

Answer:

5.6 L

Explanation:

We can apply Charles' Law here since our pressure is constant (will not change inside the refrigerator) and we are relating change in volume with change in temperature:

V₁ / T₁ = V₂ / T₂ where V₁ and T₁ are initial volume and temperature, and V₂ and T₂ are final volume and temperature. Let's plug in what we know and solve for the unknown:

28.0 L / 25 °C = V₂ / 5 °C => V₂ = 5.6 L

5.6 L is our new volume (at 5 °C).
