When light from a distant star appears to slightly red shift or slightly blue shift i.e., it seems to sometimes move away from us and sometimes move towards us, it is most likely to have planets around it. This method is known as Doppler spectroscopy.

This happens because of the unequal masses of the planet and the star the center of gravity does not lie in between them but rather in the star itself. Around this center of gravity the planet and the star will move. This causes the star to wobble.
